4.4. Technical summary

  • An ontology is often best expressed using triples: subject-predicate-object.
  • An ontology can be handwritten or drawn (as a diagram) for the benefit of humans.
  • An ontology has to use a schema — a formal system of technical notation — so that it can be understood by computers.
  • There are two broad types of schemas: database schemas and XML schemas.
  • A schema codifies an ontology. The schema is then applied to actual data in order to codify the data in line with the ontology.
