Medieval characters are often quite different to modern ones. Often scribes will use a shorthand character, especially a bar (or macron) above or through another letter, like ā (for "an") or ꝓ (for "per" or "por") In addition, sometimes they use different forms for the same letter, like "ſ" and "s".
