Paul in London, and to the other Ministers there and euery of them do send greeting. And where it is so, that of late I haue receaued the sayde soueraygne Lorde the kinges Maiesties letter, of suche tenure as is hereunto annexed, and according to my most bounden dutye, am right well wylling and desiring that the sayde letters should be in all pointes duely executed and obserued according to the tenure and purporte of the same, as appertaineth: these therefore are to require, and also straitly to charge you and euery of you on hys Maiesties behalfe. &c. that you do admonish and commaunde, or cause to be admonished or commaunded, all and singuler Persons, Vicars, and Curates of your iurisdictiō, to obserue and accomplishe the same from time to time accordingly: Furthermore, requiring and likewise charging you and euery of you, to make certificate herein to me, my Chauncelour, or other my officers in this behalf, with such conuenient celeritie as appertayneth, both of your doinges and procedinges in the execution hereof, and also of the persons and names of all suche, as from hence forth shalbe found negligent in doing their duties in the premisses, or any of them. MarginaliaSlacknes of Boner in furtheryng good procedinges.Moreouer for somuch as þ^e king at that instant hearyng the mutteryng of certaine rebellion then stirring (wherof more shall be sayd the Lord willyng hereafter) and also beyng credibly informed by diuers, that through the euill example, slacknes of preachyng and administring the Sacramentes, and careles contempte of Boner Bishop of Lōdon, not onely many of the people within the Citie of London and other places of his Dioces were very negligēt and forgetfull of their dueties to God in frequentyng the diuine seruice then stablished and set forth by the authoritie of Parlament: MarginaliaPopishe Masse priuely frequented in places agaynst the lawe.but also that diuers other vtterly despising the same, did in secret places of his Dioces often frequēt the popishe Masse, and other foraine rites not allowed by the lawes of this Realme, hee thought it therfore good (hauyng therby iust cause to suspect his former dissembling doublenes)  

to appoint the Lorde Protector and the rest of his priuy Counsaile to call the sayd B. before them, & accordyng to their wise and discrete iudgementes, to deale with hym for the same. Marginalia1549.
Boner called before the Coūsaile.Whereupon the xj. day of August (an. 1549)   they sent a messenger for hym, and vpon his appearaunce, made first declaration of such informations and complaintes, as had bene thertofore made agaynst him. And then after sharpe admonitions & reproufes for his euill demeanours in the premisses, they deliuered vnto hym from the kyng (for his better reformation and amendement) certein priuate Iniunctions to be necessarily folowed & obserued of hym self. MarginaliaBoner assigned by the Counsaile to preach at Paules Crosse.And wheras in þ^e first braunch of the sayd Iniunctiōs, he was personally assigned to preach at Paules crosse the Sonday three weekes then next ensuyng (bycause both the daungerous and fickle estate of the tyme, and also partly his own suspicious behauiour so required) they farther deliuered vnto him in writyng such Articles to intreate vpon in his Sermon, as they thought then most meete and necessarie for the tyme and causes aforesayd. All whiche Iniunctions and Articles, for the farther manifestation therof, I haue here inserted, as foloweth.

MarginaliaAdmonitiō geuen to Boner by the Counsaile.FOrasmuch as we are aduertised, that amongest other disorders of our subiectes, at this present there be diuers of our Citie of London and other places within your Dioces, which being very negligent & forgetfull of their duety to almyghty God, of whō all good thyngs are to be looked for, do assēble them selues very seldome and fewer tymes then they were heretofore accustomed, vnto common prayer and to the holy Communiō, beyng now a tyme whē it were most nedefull with hartand mynde to pray to our heauenly father for hys ayde and succour: wherof as we be right sory, so we do vnderstand, that through your euill example and the slackenes of your preachyng and instructing our sayd people to do their dueties, this offence to God is most generally committed: for where heretofore vpon all principall Feastes and such as were called Maius duplex,  

you your selfe were wont to execute in person, now since the tyme that we by the aduise of our whole Parlamēt haue set a most godly and deuoute order in our Church of Englād and Ireland, ye haue very seldome or neuer executed vppon such or other dayes, to the cōtempt of our procedynges, & euil exāple of others: MarginaliaBoner refrayned to execute al principall faultes, contrary to his wonted maner.and for asmuch as it is also brought to our knowledge þ^t diuers, aswell in Londō as in other places of your Dioces, do frequent & haunt foraine rytes of Masses, and such as bee not allowed by the orders of our Realme, and contemneth and forbeareth to prayse and laude God, and pray vnto his Maiestie after such rytes & ceremonies, as in this realme are approued and set out by our authoritie: and further that adultery & fornication is maintayned and kept openly and commonly in the said Citie of Londō and other places of your Dioces, wherby the wrath of God is prouoked agaynst our people: MarginaliaBoner noted of slacknes in hys dutie, and of contempt of publicke lawes.of the which thinges, you beyng heretofore admonished, yet hetherto haue made no redresse, as to the pastorall office, authoritie, and cure of a Byshop doth appertayne: We therefore, to whom the supreme cure and charge of this Church doth appertayne, to auoyde from vs the hygh indignation of almighty God, by the aduise of our most entierly beloued vncle the Lord Protectour and the rest of our priuy Counsayle, haue thought it no lesse then our most bounden duety, now at this present, and eftsoones peremptorily to admonishe, charge, and warne you, that you do most straightly looke vppon the premisses and see them so reformed, that there may appeare no negligence on your behalfe, vpon such paine as by our lawes Ecclesiasticall and temporall we may inflict vpon you, vnto depriuation or otherwise, as shall seeme to vs for qualitie of the offence reasonable. And to the intent you should the better see to the reformation of the sayd abuses, we haue thought good to geue you these Iniunctions folowyng.

Boner admonished to preach euery quarter at Paules Crosse.1 First, ye shall preach at Paules Crosse in London in proper person, the Sonday after the date hereof three weekes, and in the same Sermon declare and set forth the Articles hereunto annexed: and ye shall preach hereafter once euery quarter of the yeare there, exhortyng in your Sermon the people to obedience, prayer, and godly lyuyng: and ye shalbe present at euery Sermon hereafter made at Paules Crosse, if sickenes or some other reasonable cause do not let you.

Marginalia2.2 Secondly, you your selfe in person shall from henceforth euery day which heretofore was accompted in this Church of England, principall Feaste, or Maius duplex, and at all such tymes as the Byshops of London your predecessours were wont to celebrate and synge hygh Masse, now celebrate and execute the Communiō at the hyghe alter in Paules, for the better example of all other, except sickenes do let.

Marginalia3.3 Thyrdly, ye shall your selfe accordyng to your duety and the office of a Byshop, call before you all such as do not come vnto and frequent the common praier and seruice in the Church, or doe not come vnto Gods board and receaue the Communion, at the least once a yeare: or who soeuer do frequent or go vnto any other ryte or seruice then is appoynted by our boke, either of Mattyns, Euensonge, or Masse in any Church, Chappell, or other priuate places within your Dioces, and ye shall see all such offenders conuented before you and punished, accordyng vnto the Ecclesiasticall lawes, with seuere and straite punishement therefore. Lykewise ye shall see one onely order vsed in your Dioces, accordyng to our sayd booke and none other.
