MarginaliaEx Euseb lib. 6. cap. 40. 41. 42.
The Epistle of Dionisius b. of Alexādria to Fabius.
This persecution (sayth he) began not with the proclamation set forth by the Emperour, but beganne an whole yeare before: by the occasion & meanes of a wicked person, a sourthsayer, and a folower of wicked arts: Whoe comming to our citye here MarginaliaA cōmotiō of the people of Alexandria agaīst the Christians.stirred vp the multitude of the Hethen against vs, & incited them to maintayne their old supersticion and gentilitie of their countrye, wherby they being set a gog, and obtayning ful power to prosecute their wicked purpose, so thought and no lesse declared, all their piety and religion to consiste onely in the Idolatrous worship of diuyls, and in our destruction. MarginaliaMetra, martyr. And firste flyeng vpon a certaine priest of ours, named Metra, apprehended hym and broughte hym foorth, to make him speake after their wicked blasphemye. Which whan he would not do, they layd vpon hym with staues and clubbes, and with sharpe reedes pricked his face and eyes, and afterward bringing him out into the suburbes, there they stoned him to death. MarginaliaQuinta a faythfull womā & martyr. Then they tooke a faithful woman called Quinta, and brought her to the temple of their Idoles, to compell her to worship with them. Which whan she refused to do, & abhorred their Idoles, they bound her feete, and drewe her through the whole streete of the citie, vpon the harde stones, and so dashing her against milstones, and scourgyng her with whipps brought her to the same place of the suburbes, as they did the other before, wher she likewise ended her life. This done, in a great outrage, and with a multitude rūning together, they brust into houses of the religious and godly Christians, spoyling, sacking, and carying away al that they could finde of any price. The rest of thinges, such as wer of lesse value and of wood, they brought into þe open market, & set them on fire. MarginaliaPacience and ioy in affliction. In the meane time the brethren voyded a side, and withdrew themselues, taking paciently, and no les ioyfully the spoyling of their goods, then did they of whom S. Paule doth testifie. MarginaliaThe constancie of the Martyrs of AlexandriaNeither do I know any of them al (one onely excepted) apprehended of them, whiche reuolting from his profession, denied the Lord, yet to this present day.

Thuswas no way, neither priuie nor publicke, no corner nor ally left for vs, neither by day nor by night to escape, al the people making an outcrye againste vs, the vnlesse we vttered wordes of blasphemy, we should be drawen to the fire & burned. MarginaliaThe iust punishment of God turning the cruelty of aduersaries vpon them selues. And this outragious tumult endured a certayne space, but at length, as the Lord would, the miserable wretches fell at discension and ciuill sedicion among them selues, which turned the cruelty they exercised against vs, vpon their own heads. And so had we a litle breathing time for a season, whyle the fury of the heathen people by this occasion asswaged.

Shortly then after this, word was brought vnto vs of the state of the Empire, which before was something fauourable to vs, to be altered and chaunged against vs, putting vs in great feare. And consequentlye vpon the same followed the edict of the Emperour so terrible and cruel, that according to the forewarning of the Lorde, the elect if it had bene possible, might haue bene thereby offended, and subuerted. Vpon that edict such feare cam ouer vs al, that many there were, especiallye of the rycher sorte, of whom some for feare came running, some were led by the occasion of tyme, some were drawen by their neighbours being cited by name, to those vnpure and idolatrous sacrifices. Other some came trembling and shaking, as men not which shoulde do sacrifice, but which shoulde bee sacrificed them selues, the multitude laughing them scorne.
