K. Henry. 8. A Table of the Frenche Martyrs.

Persecuters.Martyrs.The Causes.

of whom also he is the head.
Inquisitor.
Where is this congregation, or how is it knowen?
The Martyr.
It is dispersed throughe the vniuersall worlde, in di-
uers regions, and is knowen by the spirituall directiō,
wherwith it is gouerned, þt is to say, both by the word of
God, & by the right institution of Christes Sacraments.
Inquisitor.
Do ye thincke the Church that is at Geneua, Lausanna,
Berne, and such other places, to be a more true Churche
then the holy Churche of Rome?
The Martyr.
Yea Verely, for these haue the notes of the true church.
Inquisitor.
What difference then make you betwene those Chur-
ches, and the Churche of Rome?
The Martyr.
MarginaliaDifference betwene the church of Rome, & the church of Christ.Much, for the churche of Rome is gouerned onely
with traditions of men: but those are ruled onely by the
word of God.
Inquisitor.
Where learned you this doctrine first?
The Martyr.
In England, at London.
Inquisitor.
How long haue you bene at Geneua?
The Martyr.
About ix. or x. yeares.
Inquisitor.
Doest thou not beleue the virgin Mary to be a medi-
atrix and aduocate to God for sinners?
The Martyr.
MarginaliaThe virgin Mary no aduocate.I beleue as in the worde of God is testified, Iesus
Christ to bee onely mediatour and aduocate for all sin-
ners. Albeit the virgine Mary be a blessed woman, yet
the office of an aduocate belongeth not vnto her.
Inquisitor.
The Saincts that be in Paradise, haue they no pow-
er to pray for vs?
The Martyr.
MarginaliaWhether sainctes doe praye. No: but I iudge them to be blessed, and to be conten-
ted with that grace and glory, whiche they haue, that is,
that they be counted the members of the sonne of God.
Inquisitor.
And what then iudge you of them, whiche folow the
religion of the churche of Rome? thinke you them to bee
Christians?
The Martyr.
MarginaliaThe church of Rome, is not the church of Christ. No, for that churche is not gouerned with the spirit
of God, but rather fighteth agaynst the same.
Inquisitor.
Do you then esteme all them, whiche separate them
selues from the churche of Rome, to be Christians?
The Martyr.
I haue not to aūswere for others, but onely for me self.
Euery man (sayth S. Paul) shall beare hys owne burden.MarginaliaGalat. 6.
And thus the Aduocate, when he had asked him
whether he would put his hand to that he had sayd, and
had obteyned the same, departed to dyner.
At the next examination, was brought vnto him a Frā
ciscane Frier, who first entryng with him touchyng the
wordes that he spake in his Inne, asked him, why that grace
might not be said in Latine. Because (sayd he) by the word
of God, Christiās are cōmaūded to pray with hart & with
spirite, & with that tongue, which is most vnderstanded, &
serueth best to the edification of the hearers. Then the Frier
bringing forth his Benedicite, Agimus tibi
gratias,

&c. Laus Deo, pax viuis, requies defunctis, &c.began thus to reason.
The Frier.
MarginaliaPraying in a straunge tongue.God vnderstandeth all tongues: and the churche of
Rome hath prescribed this forme of praying, receauyng
the same from the auncient churche & the fathers, whiche
vsed then to pray in Latine. And if any tongue be to bee
obserued in prayer, one more thē an other: why is it not
as good to praye in the Latine tongue, as to praye in the
Frenche?

Persecuters.Martyrs.The Causes.

The Martyr.
My meaning is not to exclude any kinde of language
from prayer, whether it be the Latine, Greke, Hebrue or
any other, so that the same be vnderstāded, and may edi-
fie the hearers.
The Frier.
When Christ entred the citie of Hierusalem, the people
cryed, laudyng him with Osanna filio Dauid, and yet vn-
derstode they not what they sayd, as Hierome writeth.
The Martyr.
It may be, that Hierome so writeth, how they vnder-
stode not the propheticall meanyng, or the accomplish-
ment of these wordes vpō Christes commyng: but that
they vnderstode not the phrase of that speache or lāguage
which they spake, speaking in their own language, Hie-
rome doth not denye.
Then the Frier, declaring that hee was no fitte person to
expound the Scriptures, beyng ignorant in the Latin tōgue,
inferred the authorities of Councels and Doctors, and te-
stimonies of men, which seemed to moue the Officer,
not a litle: who then charging him with many thinges,
as with wordes spoken in contempt of the virgin Mary, and
of the Saintes: also with rebellion agaynst princes and kings,
came at last to the matter of the Sacrament, and demaun-
ded thus.
Inquisitor.
MarginaliaThe Sacrament.Doest thou beleue the holy hoste, whiche the Priest
doth consecrate at Masse, or no?
The martyr.
I beleue neither the hoste, nor any such consecration.
Inquisitor.
Why? doest thou not beleue the holy Sacrament of the
aultar, ordeined of Christ Iesus him selfe?
The Martyr.
Touchyng the Sacrament of the Lordes Supper, I
beleue, that when soeuer we vse the same, accordyng to
the prescription of S. Paul, we are refreshed spiritually
with the body and bloud of our Lord Iesus Christ, who
is the true spirituall meate and drinke of our soules.
The Frier.
The Frier then inferred the wordes of S. Iohns Gos
pell, saying: My fleshe is meate in dede. &c. and sayd thatMarginaliaIoh. 6.
the Doctours of the churche had decided that matter al-
ready, and had approued the Masse to be an holy memo-
rie of the death and passion of our Lord Iesus Christ.
The Martyr.
The Sacrament of the Supper I beleue to be ordey-
ned of the Lord for a memoriall of his death, & for a stir-
ryng vp of our thankes geuyng to him. In whiche Sa-
crament we haue nothyng to offer vp to hym, but
do receaue with all thankes geuing, the benefites offered
of God to vs most abundātly, in Christ Iesus his sonne.
And thus the Aduocate, with the Frier, byd-
dyng the Notary to write the wordes that he had spoken, de
parted. Who after viij. dayes, beyng accompanyed with the
sayd Franciscane, and other Friers moe of the Dominickes,
sent for the sayd Richard Feurus agayne to his house, and
thus began to inquire.
Inquisitor.
MarginaliaPurgatorye.Doest thou beleue any Purgatorye?
The Martyr.
I beleue that Christ with hys precious bloud, hath
made an ende of all Purgatorye and purgation of our
synnes.
Inquisitor.
And doest thou thinke thē there is no place after this
life, where soules of men departed, remayne so long, till
they haue made satisfaction for their sinnes?
The Martyr.
No: but I acknowledge one satisfaction once made
for the sinnes of all men, by the bloud and sacrifice of Ie-
sus Christ our Lord, whiche is the propiciation and pur-
gation for the sinnes of the whole world.
The Frier.
In the 18. chap. of S. Math, Christ speaketh, by way
of a parable or similitude, of a certeine cruell seruaunt,
who because he would not forgeue his felowe seruaunt,
was cast in prison, and sayth: That he shall not come out
from thence before hee hath payde the vttermost far-MarginaliaMath. 18.
