Therefore, it is manifest, that true Apostles do not desire the temporall goods of them to whō they preach, neyther do they beg or craue the same: They therefore that require any thing of them to whom they preach, or els that any other man asketh for thē, or in their names: do not seeme to be true Apostles, but false preachers.

MarginaliaSigne. 19. is that true apostles doo not tender euill for good as false do.The. xix. signe is, that true Apostles are patient in tribulation, neither doo they render euill for good, Mathew. 10. Behold I sende you as sheepe among wolues. Glose. They that occupy the place of preaching, ought not to procure any euyll towarde their brethren, as the example of Christ teacheth. 1. Peter. 2. saying: who whē he was reuiled, reuiled not agayne, but did submit him selfe to hym that iudged him vniustlye. They therefore that suffer not iniury, but rather do wrong themselues, are not true Apostles, but false Apostles.

Ye shall be hated of all men for my names sake: but yet at the length such get the victorye: According to that saying of the fyrst of S. Ihon the. v chapiter. Euery thing that is of God ouercommeth the world. They therfore that in the beginning reioyse and are well intertayned, but in the ende are reiected, seeme not to be true Apostles but false.

MarginaliaSigne. 21. is that true preachers: build not vpon an other mans foundationThe. xxj. signe is. That true preachers goe not to preach vnto those which haue preachers appoynted vnto them, because they haue not to reioyse of a company belonging to an other mans charge, as to þe Romaines the. xv. chapiter. I haue preached þe gospel where Christ was not before preached, least I shoulde builde vpon an other mans foundation. And in the second epistle of S. Paul to the Corinthians the x. chapter, he sayth: We are no boasters, nor busie in other mēs matters. Glos. where an other man had layde the foundation. Likewise in the same, cha. Not hauing pleasure to boast of other mens labours, that is to say, of those which be cōmitted to the gouernment of an other man. Lykewyse Augustine sayth. Honour ought to seeke thee, and not thou honour. Also Chrisostome:

MarginaliaAuthoritie loueth thē that refuse her and yet abhorreth her not.Authoritie is in loue with such a mā, as refuseth hyr, and yet abhorreth her not. They therefore that procure and haue desyre to preach vnto þe people committed to an other mans charge, which is an office of honour: especially in councels, Synods, and great assemblies, also in kings and princes courtes, & prelates palaces, are not true Apostles but false teachers.

MarginaliaSigne. 22. is that true prophetes are not proud and vayneglorious as false prophets are.The. xxij. signe is, that true Apostles whē they know them selues to do much good in the church, and congregation of GOD: yet notwithstanding, are not puffed vp with pryde. Exechiell the. 3. O sonne of man, I haue made thy face as an Adamants stone. The Adamant stone when it draweth yron vnto it, is not therby eyther lifted vp or altered. Likewise, a true preacher when he draweth sinners vnto him by his preaching (whose harts were as hard as yron) is neuer þe more lifted vp or higher minded therfore. But as in Luke the. 18. chapiter: when ye haue done all that ye can and as well as ye can, yet say that you are vnprofitable seruauntes. Psalme. Not vnto vs Lord not vnto vs, but to thy name be geuen the glory. They therfore, that do arrogantlye boaste them selues of the fruit and benefit that they haue done in the church of God, saying: we haue geuen light to the vniuersall church, which was blinde before our tyme, and we haue put out the flame of sinne in the churche of God (when perhappes they haue more furthered hipocrisie, then eyther truth or veritie) they are not true prophets but false, of whom it is spoken in the Psalmes. MarginaliaSigne. 23. is that false prophets be alwayes mē pleasers.The. xxiij. signe is, that true Apostles do no seeke the fauour of the worlde, nor yet how to please men: As to the Galathians the 1. If I should please men, that is to say, if I had a desire to please men, I should not be theseruaunt of God, wherupon to Timothie the. 1. epistle the. 2. chap. Not as mē pleasers. Glo. Seking to please, because we haue not the pleasing spirite. Therfore those preachers that seeke the fauour of the world, and do labour to thys intent that they might please men, are not true Apostles but false.

MarginaliaSigne. 24. is that true prophets eat what is set before them and geue god thankes, but that do not the false prophets.The. xxiiij. signe is, that true Apostles when they haue meate and drinke they are contented, neyther doe they desire ouer daintie fare, accordyng to the saying of Math. the 10. cha. Eating and drinking those things that are set before them. Glo. The Gospell condemneth not all together costlye and delicate fare, yet so alloweth the same, that if we haue meate and drinke, we ought not to grutche, but to be therwith contented. Therfore, those preachers which althoughe that neyther they be sent, nor haue authoritie to preach, and yet are offended when they haue not fine and delicate fare, are not true Apostles but false preachers.

MarginaliaSigne. 25. is that false prophets do loue more their owne estimation, then that the worde of God should be truely taught.The. xxv. signe is, that true Apostles doe loue more the lawe of God, then their owne estimation amongst their neighbours: According to that in the. 7. chapter of the Prouerbes. Kepe my lawe as the apple of thyne eye, and bynde the same vpon thy fingers, & write the same in the table of thy harte: wherevpon in the. 119. Psalme. The lawe of thy mouth is dearer vnto me then thousandes of golde and siluer. Glose. Charitie doth more loue the law of God, then the desire of golde and siluer a thousand folde. He therefore that seeth the gospell of Christ troden vnder the foote, which is the eternall glad tydings to be taken away by that cursed one, and doth neglecte and contemne the same, or els peraduenture consenteth vnto the same, to the outward appearāce of þe world: And yet because he will keepe hys temporall dignitie and estimation, refuseth not to styrre vp strife and contention about the same, and so to be euill spoken of: seemeth not to be an Apostle of Christ, but rather a false prophet, if he be a preacher.

MarginaliaSigne. 26. is that false prophets are not contēted with necessary things, but looke after superfluous.The. xxvj. signe is, that true Apostles seke not after such fine lodginges and welthy habitations, where they may haue all thinges at these commaundementes: but rather suche honest resting places, where they may haue necessarye thinges for themselues, with their good wils of whom they haue it. And they take nothyng of suche, whom they see to be so readie and liberall in geuing: as that thinke the one doth hym more pleasure in receauing the gifte then the other doth in geuing hym the same. According to that in the. x. chapiter of Mathew, saying: Into what citie or towne so euer ye shall enter, enquyre out those that be of good reporte in the same: and abyde you with them, so longe as you tarye in the same citie or town. Glo. Your hoste with whō ye lodge, ought to be chosen by the good reporte of neighbours, least your preaching be euill spoken of by reason of hys infamie. Neither ought such men to runne from house to house. But whom shall we call worthy, or of good reporte? Glos. Hym, who knoweth better to do other men good, then to receaue a good turne of an other: and this is he which geueth willinglye for Christes cause, and not in respecte of any commoditie. Also true Apostles receaue nothing of suche men as lye waltering in theyr sinnes, but rather of those that are washed and clensed from their sinnes, wherupon the. 2. to the Corinthians the. 7. chapiter. They haue geuen them selues fyrst to þe Lorde. Glo. Because they now amending their old errours and vitious maners haue vowed them selues vnto the Lorde, and afterwarde gaue of that whiche they had to their brethren. For otherwyse, they ought not to haue taken any thing of them, because giftes do blinde the eyes. But those that geue, where there is no cause of reprofe in their doing, haue no iust cause to geue. Therfore, those preachers that seeke how to come by daintye fare, and do receaue brybes and rewardes of naughtie
