Commentary   *   Close

This is Archbishop Courtenay's response to the defence presented by Nicholas Hereford and Philip Repingdon. It is an official warning that their views are unacceptable and will be pronounced heretical. The document is copied from Lambeth Palace Library, Courtenay Register, fo. 29v.

: we William by Gods permission Archb. of Cant. Metropolitane of all England, and Legate of the Apostolique see, and through all our prouince of Cant. Inquisitour of all heretical prauitie: Do sufficiently and lawfully admonish and cite you Nicholas Herforde and Phillip Reppingdon professours of diuinitie, hauing thys day and place assigned you by your owne consent and our prefiction, peremptorily to aunswere and to say, fully and plainlye your opinions touching these conclusions wherunto we do referre you (all subtill, sophisticall, and Logicall wordes set aparte) being therunto sworne, cited and cōmaŪded: Which thyng to do, without cause reasonable or any licence geuen therunto, you neyther haue been willing nor are willing, nay rather ye contemptuouslye refuse to answere vnto some of those conclusions before vs iudiciallie, according to the effecte of our monition, citation, and cōmaundement beforesayd. But for that, ye haue aunswered vnto some of them hereticallie, and to other some erroneously, although not fully, we admonishe and cite you once, twyse, and thryse, and that peremptorilie: that plainlye and fullye (all subtle, sophisticall and Logicall woordes set aparte, you and euery of you, answere vnto the same conclusions, and vnto that sense and meaning by vs limited: vnder the payne that otherwyse such conclusions deserue by you confessed, and that for the same conclusions you ought to haue

Unlike the warning to Hereford and Repingdon, this warning to Aston, who presented only a verbal defence to the Blackfriars council, was followed by excommunication and condemnation for heresy. These documents are copied from Lambeth Palace Library, Courtenay Register, fos. 29v-30r.

: we William by Gods permission, Archb. of Cant. Primate of England, Legate of the see Apostolicall, and through all our prouince of Cant. of all hereticall prauitie chiefe Inquisitour: doe monishe & cite thee, Iohn Ayshton maister of arte, and student in diuinitie appearing before vs, iudiciallye to saye and speake the plaine veritie touching these conclusions to þe which we do referre the: & to þe which we haue caused thee to sweare, layeng thy hand vpon a boke: as being also otherwyse by vs monished and cōmaunded to keepe thys day & place by vs appoynted, for the third tyme peremtorilie, to propone such reasonable cause (if thou hast any) wherfore thou oughtest not to be pronoūced an heretique. And sufficiently and lawfully we monishe and cite thee, the first, second, and third tyme, and that peremptorilie, that thou, fully and playnly (all subtill, sophisticall, and logicall wordes set aparte) do aunswere vnto the same conclusions, vnder the payne that vnto such conclusions belong and on thy part confessed, and that thou for such conclusions oughtest to suffer. MarginaliaI. Asheton seuerally examined.Which monition, being thus premised: The sayd Archbishop red the first conclusion, and of the sayd Iohn inquired what was hys opinion and meaning therin, and hereupon he sayd hys minde concerning the foresayd monition. MarginaliaThe archb. and his friers do flee the english tongue for the people. Then, the foresaid Iohn Ayshton being often required by the Archbishop that he woulde aunswere in the Latin tounge to those questions which were demaunded of hym because of the lay people that stoode about hym: he cryeng out in the English tonge vttered friuolous and opprobrious contumelies to moue and excite the people agaynste the sayde Archbyshop as itshould seeme. Neyther dyd he vnto the first conclusion nor vnto any of these other conclusions, effectually & pertinently seme to thē to answer: but rather by subteltis & shifts, saying oftē times & expresly as Luke sayd, it was sufficient for hym to beleue as the holy church beleued. Then the sayd Archbishop examined hym vpon the first conclusion touching the sacrament of þe aulter: whither, that after the wordes of consecration, there remayned materiall bread, particuler bread, or vniuersall bread? MarginaliaWhether materiall bread remaine in the sacrament. He sayd that that matter passed his vnderstanding, and therfore sayd: he woulde in that forme and maner aunswere and otherwyse not. But amongst other thynges, he spake in deryding wise vnto the said Archb. against thys word Materiall, saying, you may put that in your purse if you haue any. Wherupon, the sayde Archbish. calling that an vnwyse and folysh aunswer as the reast of the doctors dyd (of whom mētion was made before) the rather for that he was a graduat in the scholes, farther proceded against þe sayd Iohn Ayshton in this wise.

And thou Ihon Aishton monished and commaunded by vs as is aforesaid, after thine othe taken: without any reasonable cause or any other licence, neither wouldest thou nor yet wyll, but refusest and yet doest contemptiously, to aunswere vnto such conclusions before vs, iudicially accordyng to our monition and commaūdemēt aforesayd: do hold all such conclusions by thee confessed, and thee the foresayd Ihon withal thy sayd conclusions, conuicted. And therfore we do pronounce and declare by sentence giuing, that thou Ihon Aishton cōcerning those conclusions, whiche by vs with good deliberation of diuers prelates our suffraganes, and also diuers and sondry professours of diuinitie, and other wise men and learned in the lawe accordyng to the Canonicall sanctions, beyng cōdempned and declared for an hereticke and hereticall: to haue been and still is, an heretique, and thy cōclusions hereticall. And as touchyng thy other conclusions by vs heretofore counted erroneous, and for erroneous condempned: wee do pronounce and declare sentencially by these our writtinges, that both thou hast erred and doest erre.
