K. Henry. 4. Examination of maister W. Thorpe. Actes and Mon. of the church.

sayd conditions, nor loueth to busy them faithfully for to haue. For as I well know, since I haue full oft assayde, examine whosoeuer will xx. of these pilgrimes: and he shall not finde iij. men or womē that know surely a commaundement of God, nor can say their Pater noster, and Aue Maria, nor their Crede readyly in any maner of language. And as I haue learned and also know somwhat by experience of these same pilgrimes, tellyng the cause, why that many men and women go hether and thether now on pilgrimages: It is more for the health of their bodies, then of their soules: more for to haue riches and prosperitie of this worlde, then for to be enriched with vertues in their soules: more to haue here worldly and fleshly frendship, then for to haue frendshyp of God, & of hys saintes in heauen. For whatsoeuer thyng man or womā doth, the frendshyp of God, nor of any other Saint can not be had, without kepyng of Gods cōmaundementes. MarginaliaPilgrimage displeasaunt to God.Further, with my protestation I say nowe as I sayd in Shrewsbery, though they that haue fleshly willes, trauel farre their bodies and spend mekil money, to seke and to visit the bones or Images (as they say they doe) of this Saint or of that: such pilgrimage going is neither praysable nor thākeful to God nor to any Saint of god, since in effect, all such pilgrimes despise God and all hys commaundementes and saintes. For the commaundemētes of God they will nother know nor kepe, nor confirme them to lyue vertuously by example of Christ and of hys saintes. MarginaliaGoodes ill bestowed, in pilgrimage.Wherfore Syr, I haue preached and taught opēly, and so I purpose all my lyfe tyme to doe with Gods helpe, saying þt such fond people waste blamefully gods goodes in their vaine pilgrimages, spēdyng their goods vpon vitious hostelars, whiche are oft vncleane women of their bodies: & at the least, those goods with the which they should do workes of mercy after Gods biddyng, to poore nedy men and women.

MarginaliaThe inconuenience that commeth by Pilgrimage. These poore mens goodes and their lyuelode, these runners about, offer to riche priestes whiche haue mekill more lyuelode thē they neede. And thus those goods they waste wilfully, and spend them vniustly agaynst Gods biddyng vpon straungers, with which, they should helpe and relieue, after Gods will, their pore nedy neighbours at home: ye and ouer this folly, oft tymes diuers mē and women, of these runners thus madly hether and thether into pilgrimage: borow hereto, other mens goodes, ye & sometyme they steale mens goodes hereto, and they pay them neuer againe. Also Syr, I know well that when diuers men and womē will go thus after their own wils, and findinge out one pilgrimage: they will ordeine with them before, to haue with them both men & women, that can well sing wanton songes, and some other pilgrimes, will haue with them bagge pipes: so that euery towne þt they come thorow, what with the noyse of their singing, and with the soūd of their pipyng, and with the iangling of their Canterbury bels, and with the barkyng out of dogges after them, that they make more noyse, thē if the kyng came there away, withall his clarions, and many other mynstrels. And if these men & women be a moneth out in their pilgrimage, many of them shalbe an halfe yeare after, great iangelers, tale tellers, and lyers.

And the Archbishop said to me: Leud losell, thou seest not farre inough in this matter, for thou considerest not the great trauel of pilgrimes: therfore, thou blamest that thyng that is praysable. I say to thee, that it is right well done, that pilgrimes haue with them both singers and also pipers: that when one of them that goeth barefote, striketh his toe vpon a stone, and hurteth him sore, and maketh him to blede: it is well done that he or his felow begyn then a song, or els take out of his bosome a bagpipe, for to dryue away with such mirth, the hurt of his felow. MarginaliaWell spoken my Lord for Lincolnshire bagpipe. And why then did Bonner blame Philpot for singing in the stockes. For with such solace, the trauel & werines of pilgrimes, is lightly and merely borne out.

And I sayd. Syr, S. Paul techeth men to weepe with them that weepe.

And the Archbishop sayd. What ianglest thou against mēs deuotiō. What soeuer thou or such other say, I say that the pilgrimage that nowe is vsed, is to them that do it, a praysable and a good meane to come the rather to grace. MarginaliaA new found way to grace of the byshops making. But I holde thee vnable to know this grace, for thou enforsest thee to let the deuotion of the people: since by authoritie of holy Scripture, men may lefully haue and vse such solace as thou reprouest. For Dauid in hys last Psalme, teacheth me to haue diuers instruments of musicke for to prayse therwith God.

And I sayd. MarginaliaInstrumēts & musike of the old testament, how they are to be applyed and vsed, in the testament.Syr, by the sentence of diuers doctours expoundyng the Psalmes of Dauid: that musike and minsterlsy that Dauid & other saintes of the olde law spake of, ought nowe nother to be taken nor vsed by the letter, but these instrumentes with their musike ought to be interpreted ghostly: For al those figures are called vertues and grace, with whiche vertues men should please God, and prayse his name. For S. Paul saith: All such things befel to them in figure. Therfore Syr, I vnderstand, that the letter of this Psalme of Dauid & of such other Psalmes and sentences, doth slea thē that take them now litterally. This sentence as I vnderstand Syr, Christ approueth hym selfe, puttyng out the minstrels, or that hee would quicken the dead damsell.

MarginaliaOrgaynes in the church. And the Archbishop sayd to me. Leude losell, is it not lefull to vs to haue Organes in the Churche for to worship therewithall God? And I sayd, ye Syr, by mans ordinance: But by the ordinaunce of God, a good sermone to the peoples vnderstandyng, were mekill more pleasaunt to God.

MarginaliaA fit comparison my lord, and like your selfe. And the Archbyshop sayd, that Organes and good delectable songs, quickned and sharpned more mens wittes then should any sermon.

But I sayd. Syr, lusty men and wordly louers, delite and couet and trauell to haue all their wittes quickned and sharpned with diuers sēsible solace: But all the faithfull louers and folowers of Christ, haue all their delite to heare Gods woorde, and to vnderstand it truly, and to worke therafter faithfully & continually. For no doubt, to dread to offend God, and to loue to please him in all thyng, quickeneth & sharpneth all the wittes of Christes chosen people: and ableth them so to grace, that they ioy greatly to withdrawe their eares, & all their wittes and members, from al worldly delite and from all fleshly solace. For S. Ierome (as I thinke) sayth. MarginaliaThe saying of Ierome. No body may ioy with this world and raigne with Christ.

And the Archbyshop (as if he had ben displeased with myne answere) sayd to his clerkes. What gesse ye þt this Idiot wil speake there, where he hath noe dread: since he speaketh thus now here in my presence? Well well, by God, MarginaliaYou swere my Lorde.thou shalt be ordayned for. And then he spake to me all angerly.

MarginaliaThe 4. article concerning priests tythes.WHat sayest thou to this forth point, that is certified agaynst thee, preachyng openly and boldly in Shrewsbery, that priestes haue no title to tithes.

And I sayd. Syr, I named there no woorde of tithes in my preachyng. But more then a moneth after that I was arrested: there in prison, a man came to me into the prison, askyng me what I sayd of tithes. And I sayd to him. Syr, in this towne are many clerkes and priests, of whiche some are called religious men, though many of them be seculers. Therfore, aske ye of them this questiō. And this man sayd to me. Syr, our prelates say, that we are also obliged to pay our tithes of all thynges that renue to vs: and that they are acursed, that withdraw any part wittingly fro them of their tithes. And I sayd (Syr) to that man, as with my protestation I say now here before you: that I had wonder that any priest dare say, mē to be accursed, without ground of Gods worde. And the man sayd. Syr, our priestes say, that they curse mē thus by authoritie of Gods law. MarginaliaA paradox without Goddes word. And I sayd. Syr I know not
