Marginalia Vntruth in Copus.Also where you continuing yet still in your common place of lieng (out of which you cānot digresse) do charge me farther, þt I do appointe out holy dayes & workyngdayes by colours of read & blacke, in my foresayd Calēdare to bee obserued: these leude notes of yours, MarginaliaCopus pag. 820. lin. 25.if they had bene picked out of my Calendare by you, without myne owne speciall declaration before made to the contrary, they might seme to haue some blushe of credite. Now what will the reader say, or what may hee iudge, consideryng and conferryng this your cauillyng, with þe matter of my premonitiō made before, but þt you are all together set to play þe perpetuall syc. I had almost called you by your right name M. Cope. But God make you (as I sayd) a good man. Readyng further in your booke I could not but smile & laugh at this your ridiculous & most loude lieng Hyperbolismum: where as you comparyng my making of sanctes, with the popes making, MarginaliaCopus pag. 819. lin. 7.can finde (as ye say) in þe pope no such impudent arrogancie in presumyng, as ye finde in me. &c. If the Pope had not abused his arrogant iurisdiction in Canonising and deifyeng his sanctes, more thē I haue done: the yeare should not be cōbred with so many idle holy dayes, nor the Calendares with so many raskall sanctes, some of them as good, as euer were they that put Christe to death. But where will you finde (maister Cope) any man to beleue this your hyperbolicall comparison to bee true, which seeth and knoweth the infinite and vnmeasurable excesse of the popes arrogancie, not onely in shrining such a rable of blinde sanctes of his owne creating: but also in prescribyng the same to be receaued vniuersally in þe whole world, and not to be receaued onely, but also to be inuocated for giftes and graces, also to be worshipped for aduocates and mediatours. Cope) made within these v. hūdreth yeres, but commonly he was either some pope, or some rich bishop, and prelate, or some fat Abbat, or some blind frier, some monke, or nonne, some superstitious regulare, or some builder of monasteries, or some geuer and benefactour to the popishe clergye, or mainteyner agonisyng for the dignities & liberties of þe popishe churche? What poore lay man or lay woman, were their lyues neuer so Christian, their faith and confession neuer so pure, theyr death neuer so agonysing for the witnes of Christ, and truth of his woorde, shall finde any place or fauour in all the popes xxx, that is in the Popes Calendar, either in read colour, or els in blacke?

MarginaliaThe great Godmaker of Rome.But here (maister Cope) if ye had þe wyt, so much to defēd, as ye haue to ouerwhart, you might take me wt the maner, & reply agayn for þe defence of your great sanctmaker, or rather Godmaker of Rome: that he maketh moe Martyrs & sanctes of these foresaid poore laymen, & laywomen, then euer he did of any other. For he burneth them, he hangeth them, he drowneth them, inprisoneth & famisheth them, and so maketh them truer Martyrs of Christ, then any other of his new shrined sanctes, whom he hath so dignified in his Calēdare. For the one he doth rubricate, onely with his read letters, the other hee doth rubricate with their owne bloud. And therefore to aunswere you (maister Cope) to your comparison made betwene the Pope and me, for makyng of holy Martyrs & sāctes: Briefly I say, and report me to all the world, that herein is no comparison. For if ye speake of true Martyrs, who doth make them, but the Pope? if ye speake offalse Martyrs, who doth make them, but the Pope? And farthermore, to cōpare together the causes of these martyred sanctes in my Calendare, with them whiche shyne shrined in the popes Calendare (taking the same proportiō of tyme as I do, within these last v. hundreth yeares) why may not I haue as good cause to celebrate these in my Calendar, whiche lost their lyues and were slayne, principally for the cause of Christ and of his woorde: as the pope hath to celebrate his double and simple feasted sanctes in his Calendar, who in their doynges, doctrine, & life, as they semed rather to serue the pope, then Christ the Lord: so in their death appeared no such cause, why they should be sanctified in the churche, beyond all other. Let not the church of Christ (maister Cope) be deluded wt hypocriticall names, nor fayned apparitions, and fablelous miracles, neither be you deceaued your self, but let vs resort sincerely to the word of God.
