¶ This bloody and abhominable commission of Pope Martin, which I haue copied out of a certaine old monument remaining in the handes of Maister Hackluyt, Student in the Temple, seemeth to be directed and geuen out to the publike destruction of all faythfull Christen men, about the latter ende and breaking vp of the Councell of Constance, an. 1418. MarginaliaNote how Antichrist rageth and ryseth agaynst Christ.By the which the prudent reader hath this to note and consider, what labour what policie, what counsayl, and what lawes haue bene set, what wayes haue beene taken, what seueritye hath bene shewed, how mens power, wit, and autoritie of the whole world haue cōspired together from time to time, continually by all maner meanes, to subuert and supplant the word, and way of the Lord: And yet notwithstanding man hath not preuayled, but all his force and deuised policies haue ben ouerthrowen, dispatched, and with the counsayle of Achitophell and Ammon, haue bene brought to nought, and contrary to the fury of the world, the Gospell of Christ hath still encreased. MarginaliaMans power and coūsayle to weake agaynst Christ.Neyther yet for all this, will the Pope cease to spurne and rebell styll agaynst the kingdome of Christ, and of his Gospell: aganst which neither he, nor yet the gates of hell shall euer preuayle. Agaynst this pestilent Bul and Inquisition of Pope Martin the great Antichrist, I thought here to adioyne and annexe an other contrary writing of the Bohemiās, bearing the name and subscription of Procopius, Conradus, and other Captaines of the Bohemians, which semeth not long after the death of Zisca, to bee written agaynst the pestiferous sea of Rome, the tenour whereof here followeth.

¶ A fruitfull and Christian exhortation of the Bohemians to kinges and princes, to styrre them vp to the zeale of the Gospell.

MarginaliaAn exhortation of the Bohemiās.THe almighty God the father, by his welbeloued son Iesus Christ, may in his holy spirite open the vnderstanding both of you and of all Christians, and lyghten your hartes with the light of his doctrine of righteousnes, and may make you to continue therin, surely established to the end. This we desire of you for your saluation, all ye honourable, wyse, and honest noble mē, and all the Comunaltie, ye riche and poore, heare and consider with diligent heede, the woordes of this present letter, which is sent vnto you from the country of the Bohemians. It is manifest & well knowen to you & many other Cities, Kinges, princes, & Lords, þt now a certain nūber of yeares, there hath bene great discorde betwixt vs & you, & there haue bene some which haue moued youby letters, & prouoked you to make war against vs, and to destroy vs. MarginaliaThe pope and prelates by their letters styrred them to fyght.And as well on your part as on ours, many men, as wel noble as vnnoble, haue foolishly lost their liues. Yet neuer hitherto haue ye in any part vnderstood our faith by our own confession, neither whether we be able to proue the same out of the Scriptures, yea or no: and yet in the meane tyme, Kings, Princes, Lords, and Cities, haue sustayned great dammage. And hereof we greatly maruayle, that ye do so muche trust and beleue the Pope and his priestes, which geue you drinke full of poyson, and such comfort as no man can vnderstande, MarginaliaFayre wordes, to make fooles fayne.in that they saye that they will geue you forgeues of all your synnes, and great grace and pardon, to this ende, that you should warre vpon vs and destroy vs: wheras their graces and pardons are none other thē great lies, and a great seducing of the bodye and soule of all them that beleue them, and put their trust in them. MarginaliaThe pope seduceth the world with vayne promises of thinges, which he can not geue.Thys we would proue vnto them, and ouercome them by the holy scripture, and we woulde suffer, that whosoeuer is desirous to heare the same, shoulde heare it. For the Pope and all hys Priestes, herein deale wyth you as the Deuill would haue done wyth our Lorde Iesus Christ, of whom Luke writeth in his. iiij. chapter, that he brought him vpō an high hyll, and shewed vnto him in the twinkling of an eye, all the kingdomes þt are in the compasse of the earth, and sayde vnto hym: I wyll geue thee. &c. So the Deuill deceaueth the Pope and all his priestes with the riches of the worlde, and worldlye power: And they thinke they can geue grace and pardon when they will, and they them selues shall neuer finde fauour before almighty God, except thei repent & make amendes, because of their great deceiuing of Christendome. And how cā they geue that to others, which they them selues haue not? So did the deuil, who was rich in promising, and poore in geuing. And, like as the Deuill is not ashamed to tell a lye, so also they are not ashamed to speake that which yet shall neuer be founde true, MarginaliaThe deuill and the pope ryche in promising, and poore in geuing.nor be proued by the holy Scriptures, because, for no cause, they stirre vp Kinges, Princes, Lordes and Cities, to make warre agaynst vs, not to the end that the Christiā fayth should thereby be defended, but because they feare that their secrete vices and heresies shall be disclosed and made manifest. For, if they had a true cause, and a godlye loue to the Christian fayth: they woulde then take the bookes of the holy scripture, and woulde come vnto vs, and ouercome vs with the weapons of Gods woorde, and that is our chiefe desire. For so did the Apostles of our Lord Iesus Christ, who came to the Paganes and Iewes, and brought them from their infidelity, to the true fayth of our Lord Iesus Christ: and this they did in the spirit of meekenes, as the Apostle Paule wryteth in the sixt chapiter to the Galat: Brethren, if anye man be agreeued. &c. And if we woulde not abide instruction, then they might take to them Kynges, Princes, Lordes, and imperiall Cities, and resist vs, according to the commaundementes of the holy scripture. Hus and Hierome by wrongfull violence put to death.For ye must vnderstande that they were not ouercome by the holy ghost, but vniustlye, with wrongfull violence, which God maye yet hereafter greuously punishe in all thē þt gaue their counsell and ayde therto: and they saye it ought not to be suffered, that we shoulde be hearde in confessing our fayth. How maye that bee proued by the holy scripture, since Christ heard the Deuil, MarginaliaChrist heard the deuill: but the pope will not heare men confesse their fayth.as it is written in the fourth chapter of Mathewe? and they are not better then Christ, nor we worsse then the Deuil.
