K. Henry. 6. Persecution in Northfolke and Suffolke.

Thus much we haue thought good to note as concernyng Margary Backster, whiche we haue gathered out of the old monuments and registers. But what became of her after this her accusation, because we finde no mētion made in þe said registers, we are not able to declare.

The same yeare also were the like depositions made by one William Wright agaynst diuers good men, as here foloweth.

First, this deponent saith that VVilliam Taylor, told Iohn Piry of Lodney in þe house of Iohn Būgay of Beghton, in þe presēce of Iohn Būgay Robert Grigges wright of Martham and Iohn Vsher, that all the good men of Martham which were fauourers & helpers to that good man VVilliam VVhite are euill troubled now a dayes, and that the sayd VVilliam VVhite, was a good and holy doctour: MarginaliaWilliam Euerden.and that þe best doctour after him was VVilliam Euerden, whiche wrought with the sayd VVilliam Taylour of Lodney by the space of one moneth, and that the first Sōday of the same moneth, the sayd VVilliam Euerden did sit all day vpon the table at worke, saying, to the sayd VVilliam Taylor that hee would not goo to churche to shewe him self a Scribe or Pharisey: and the second Sonday he put on Gentle mans apparell, & went to Norwiche to harken how the Byshop and his ministers vsed the poore Christians there in prison.

MarginaliaThe wife and doughter of Tho. Moone.Item, that Auise, wife of Thomas Moone, is of the same sect and fauoured them, and receiueth them often, and also the daughter of Thomas Moone is partly of þe same sect, and can read Englishe.

MarginaliaRichard Fletcher.Item, that Richard Fletcher of Beckils, is a most perfect doctour in that sect, and can very well and perfectly expounde the holy Scriptures, and hath a booke of the new law in English, whiche was Syr Hue Pyes first.

MarginaliaNicholas Belward.Item, that Nicolas Belward, sonne of Iohn Belward dwellyng in the parish of Southelham, is one of þe same sect, and hath a new TestamentMarginaliaA newe Testament then cost iiii. markes and xl. pence. which he bought at Lōdon, for. iiij. markes and. xl. pence, and taught the sayd VVilliā VVright and Margerye his wife, and wrought with them cōtinually by the space of one yeare, and studied diligently vpon the sayd new Testament.

MarginaliaWilliam Bate.Item, VVilliam Bate, Taylour of Sethyng and hys wife and his sonne, which can read English very well, is of the same secte.

MarginaliaWilliam Skiruing.Item VVilliam Skiruyng of Sethyng, receiued Ioane the wife of VV. VVhite into his house, beyng brought thether by VVilliam Euerden, after theyr departure from Martham.

MarginaliaIohn Pert.Item, Iohn Pert late seruaunt of Thomas Moone is of the same sect, and can read wel, and did read in the presence of VVilliā VVhite, and was the first þt brought Syr Hugh Pie into þe company of the Lollardes, whiche assembled oftentymes together, at the house of the sayd Thomas Moone, & there conferred vpon theyr doctrine.

MarginaliaSyr Hugh Pye priest.Item, Syr Hugh Pye bequeathed to Alice, seruaunt to William White, a new Testament, whiche they thē called the booke of the new law, and was in the custody of Oswald Godfrey of Colchester.

MarginaliaIohn Perker.Iohn Perker Mercer of a village by Ipswich, is a a famous doctour of that secte. Also he sayd that fatherAbraham of Colchester is a good man.

Item, the sayd William Wright deposeth that it is read in the Prophecies amōgest the Lollardes, MarginaliaA prophesie.that the sect of Lollardes shalbe in a maner destroyed: Notwithstandyng at the length the Lollardes shall preuaile, and haue the victory agaynst all their enemyes.

Also he sayd that Tucke knoweth all of that secte in Suffolke, Norfolke and Essex.

MarginaliaIohn Burrell.IOhn Burrell seruaunt to Thomas Moone of Ludney in the dioces of Norwiche, was apprehended and arested for heresie, the ix. day of Decēber, in this yeare of our Lord. 1430. and examined by maister Williā Bernam the Bishops commissary, vpon the articles before mentioned, and diuers others here after folowyng, obiected agaynst him.

In primis that the catholicke churche is the soule of euery good Christen man.

MarginaliaLent faste fishe daies.Item, that no man is bound to fast the Lent or other fastyng dayes appoynted by the churche, for they were not appointed by God, but ordeined by the priestes; and þt euery mā may eate fleshe or fishe vpon the same dayes indifferently, according to his own will, & euery friday is a free day to eate both flesh and fish indifferently.

MarginaliaArticles.That the sacrament of cōfirmation ministred by the bishop, did auayle nothing to saluation.

That it was no sinne to withstande the ordinaunces of the Church of Rome.

That holy bread and holye water were but trifles, & that the bread and the water were the worse for the coniurations & characters which þe priestes made ouer thē.

Vpon which articles he being conuict, was forced to abiure, and receued penance in maner and forme as the other had done before him.
