Q. Mary. Godly Letters of Thomas Haukes, Martyr.

Marginalia1555. Iune.the reward, which I am fully persuaded and assured shalbe plenteously poured vpon you all, for þe great goodnes shewed vnto the seruaūtes of the lyuing God. And I most hartely beseech almightye God to poure forth a plenteous reward vpon you for þe same, and that he will assist you with his holy spirite in all your doinges, that ye may growe (as you haue begon) vnto such a perfection as may be to Gods honour, your owne saluation, and the strengthening of the weake members of Christ. MarginaliaGods elect alwayes beare the sclaunder in this worlde. For though the world rage, and blaspheme the elect people of God, ye know that it dyd so vnto Christ, his Apostles, and to all that were in the Primatiue Church, and shalbe to the worldes end.

Therfore, beleue in the light, while ye haue it, lest it be taken away from you, if you shall seeme to neglect the great mercy of God that hath bene opened vnto you, & your hartes cōsented vnto it that it is the very & onely truth pronounced by Gods onely sonne Iesus Christ by the good will of our heauenly father. Therfore I say in the bowels of my Lord Iesus Christ, sticke fast vnto it: let it neuer departe out of your hartes and conuersation, that you with vs and we with you, at the great day being one flocke, as we haue one shepheard, may ryse to the lyfe immortall, through Iesus Christ our onely Sauiour, Amen.

Yours in hym that lyueth for euer
Thomas Haukes.

Here followeth an other letter of Tho. Haukes sent to his wyfe after his condemnation, being prisoner in Newgate: the copye wherof is thys.

¶ The copy of Tho. Haukes letter to his wife.
Commentary   *   Close

This letter first appears in the 1563 edition. It is not reprinted in the Letters of the Martyrs, but it is reprinted in each subsequent edition of the Acts and Monuments.

MarginaliaA letter of Tho. Haukes vnto hys wyfe.GRace be with you, and peace from God the father, and from our Lord Iesus Christ, which gaue hym selfe for our synnes, to delyuer vs from this present euyll worlde, through the good wyll of God our father, to whō be prayse for euer and euer. Amen.

My deare yokefellow in the Lord, for as much as the Lord hath not onely called me to worke in his vinyeard, but hath also fulfilled his good worke in me (I trust to his glory, and to the cōfort of all those that looke for his comming) I thought it my dutye (deare yokefellow) to write vnto you some lessons out of Gods booke: and if you will direct your selfe thereafter, doubt not of it, but God, who refuseth none that will come to hym with their whole harte, will assist you with his holy spirit, and direct you in all hys wayes, to his honour & glory, who graunt it for his mercyes sake, Amen.

MarginaliaLessons or instructions to hys wife.Fyrst I exhort you to feare God, to serue and honour his holy name, to loue hym wyth all your hart, soule and mynde to beleue faythfully all his promises, to lay sure hold vpon them, that in all your troubles what so euer they are ye may runne straight to the great mercy of God, and he will bring you forth of them, keepe you within his winges: then shall ye be sure that neyther deuyll, flesh, nor hell shall be able to hurt you.

But take heede: If ye will not keepe hys holy preceptes and lawes, and to the vttermost of your power, call for the helpe of God to walke in the same, but will leaue them and runne to all abominations with the wicked worlde, and doe as they doe, then be sure to haue your part with the wicked worlde in the burning lake that neuer shall be quenched. Therefore MarginaliaHe exhorteth her to beware of Idolatry.beware of Idolatrye, which doth most of all styncke before the face of almighty God, and was of all good men most detested from the beginning of the worlde. For the which, what kingdomes, nations and Realmes God hath punished with most terrible plages,MarginaliaIdolatry punished of God. with fire, brymstone, hunger, sweard, and pestilence. &c. to the vtter subuersion of them, it is manifestly to be seene through þe whole Byble. Yea his owne peculiar people, whom hee had done so much for, when they fell from hym, and went and serued other Gods, contrary to his commaundement, he vtterlye destroyed, and rooted them out from of the earth: and as many as dyed in that damnable state (not repenting their abhominable euill) he threw them into þe pit of hell. Againe, how he hath preserued those that abhorre superstition and Idolatrye, and that haue onely taken hold vpon God wyth their whole hart, to serue hym, to loue him, to feare him, &c. it is most manefestly to be seene euen frō the beginning, out of what great daungers he hath euer deliuered them: yea when all hope of deliueraūce was past as touching their expectation, euen then in the sight of all his enemies would he worke his godly wyll and purpose, to the vtter amazing and destruction of all those that were hys manifest enemies.

MarginaliaExhortation to prayer.Further, exhort you in the bowels of Christ, that you will exercise & be stedfast in prayer: for prayer is þe onely meane to pearce the heauens to obtayne at the hand of God, whatsoeuer we desyre, so þt it be asked in fayth. Oh

what notable thinges do we reade in scriptures that hath bene obtayned through feruent prayer? We are commaunded to call vpon hym for helpe, ayde, and succour in necessities and troubles, & he hath promised to helpe vs. MarginaliaPraying to God and not to creatures.Againe they that will not call vpon him with their whole hart, but vpon other dead creatures, in whom there is no helpe (for there was none founde worthy to open the booke, but onely the Lambe Christ which was killed for our sinnes)

Commentary   *   Close

The imagery in this passage is derived from Revalation 20: 12-15.

I say who that will refuse his helpe, must euen by þe terrible iudgment of God, come vtterly to confusion: as it hath, and is dayly manifest to be seene. And whatsoeuer you desire of God in your prayer, aske it for Iesus Christes sake, for whom & in whom God hath promised to geue vs al things necessary. MarginaliaTo continue in prayer and to pray in the name onely of Christ. And though that which ye aske, come not by and by at the first and second calling, yet continue still knocking, and he will at the length open his treasures of mercy, so that ye shall bee sure to obtayne: for he hath so promised if ye continue in fayth, hoping surely in hym. These former lessons, wyth all such instructions as I haue tolde you by mouth, I do wish þt ye would most earnestly learne: & thē I doubt not, but God, who is the geuer of all grace, will assist you in all your doinges that ye may be found worthy of his kingdome, which is prepared through Christ.

MarginaliaCare for his children.Further, where it hath pleased God to send vs children my desyre is that they may be brought vp in the feare of God, and in his lawes. And this is to certifie you, that ye deliuer in any wise my eldest Sonne vnto MarginaliaHe meaneth M. Clement Throgmorton, who desired to haue the bringing vp of his childe.M. Throgmorton, who vpon his good will hath promised me to bring hym vp according to my desyre, and (I trust) as God hath put into his hart. See therfore that ye deliuer him in any wyse without delay: and as for the other, if ye shall seeme to bee burthened with hym (which I thinke nature will not suffer) my desire is that it be brought vp in the feare of God, to the vttermost of your endeuour, with some honest man that hath the feare of God before his eyes, and let vs geue thankes vnto God which hath geuen them vs, beseeching him that they may be counted worthy to be of þt flocke, that shall stand on the right hand of the Maiestie of God, when he shall iudge the world, Amen.

Yet once againe I warne you, that ye continue in feruent prayer, as I sayd before: then shall you be sure, that God euen of his owne mercy, according as he hath promysed, will be an husband vnto you, and prouide better for you then I was euer able to doe: yea, he will cause all men that feare hym, to pity you, to helpe you, succour you in all your necessities, so that if any will doe you wrong, he will be auenged on hym. Moreouer, I wish you MarginaliaKeeping of good company.to keepe companye with those, of whom ye may learne to come to a more perfect knowledge in God: and I doubt not but God wyl prouide that such will be glad to receiue you, if you shall professe and go forward in his truth.

MarginaliaExhortation to take heede whom shee marieth, and that she mary in the Lord. Finally and to make an ende, I desyre you that ye take heede wyth whō ye couple your selfe. See that he be a man that feareth God, loueth his lawes, and will walke in the same to the vttermost of his power: such a one as can be cōtent to loue you, and to care for you. Take heede he be no brawler, no dronkard, no wicked person, not geuen to filthynes, no worldling, no dicer nor carder: In fine, no fylthy person, but choose you such a one as God may be gloryfied in both your lyues. And againe on your part, loue him, serue him, obey him in all godlines, as long as God shall geue you life in this worlde. Then shall ye both be sure to obtayne that kingdome which God the father hath prepared and Iesus Christ obtayned for you, that neuer shall haue ende, where I trust to abyde your comming. Amen.

By your Husband Thomas Haukes.

Ye heard before in the letter of Tho. Haukes written to his wife, mention made concernyng hys eldest sonne to be sent to M. Throgmorton. Now what he writeth hym selfe to the sayd M. Throgmorton touchyng the same matter, by this his letter to þe sayd partie here vnder ensuyng, may appeare.

MarginaliaAn other letter of Tho. Haukes written to M. Clement Throgmorton.GRace, mercy, and peace from God the father and from our Lord Iesus Christ, be with you and assist you in all your thoughtes, wordes, and workes, that he in all thinges as most worthy, may be glorifyed, and that the blessing of Abraham, maye be poured plenteouslye on you and all your posteritye.

Whereas the loue of God hath moued you to require my sonne to be brought vp before your eyes, & the selfe same loue hath also moued me in like case to leaue him in your handes as vnto a father in mine absēce I shal require you in Gods behalfe, according to your promise that yee wyll see hym brought vp in the feare of the Lord, and instructed in
