Foxe explains in a marginal note that this friend, who later was a martyr himself, urged Saunders to subscribe to articles of religion which were not flatly against God's word. Saunders, in the Marshalsea, apparently asked John Philpot, Rowland Taylor and Bradford, all imprisoned in the neighbouring King's Bench, for their opinion. They were opposed to this attempt at compromise. Filthy, corrupted [OED]. 'In the blood of our Christ'. Mathematics; the word is a corruption of algorism [OED]. MarginaliaAn other letter of M. Bradford to the said maister Saunders.GOds sweete peace in Christ be with you, my good brother in the Lord Iesus, and with all your concaptiues, Amen.

That we should not bee condemned with the worlde.
and swarue from that we haue professed.
Ah good brother, if I could alwaies haue God, his maiestie, mercie, heauen, hell, &c. before myne eyes, then should I obdurare, as Paul writeth of Moses. Heb. 11. Obdurauit inquit, perinde quasi vidisset eum qui est inuisibilis.
Obdurauit inquit, perinde quasi vidisset eum qui est inuisibilis. He endured (saith he) as he that sawe hym which is invisible.
&c. Amen.
In the Lord I trust: I shall not wauer. If I walke by the valley of the shadow of death, I will not feare, for thou art with me O Lord.
For if I too walk in the middle of the darkness of death, I shall not fear evils, because you are with me.
cf. Beza: Etiam quum ambularem per vallem lethalis umbrae, non timerem malum, quia tu mecum es ...
[Is Foxe using a known Latin translation from the Hebrew - since the word 'valley' occurs in the Hebrew but not in the Greek - or is he translating directly from the Hebrew himself?]
This is a reference to the examinations for heresy which Bradford and Saunders would shortly undergo.

'They have the law and according to the law'. De heretico comburendo, thelaw making heresy a crime punishable by death, went into effect on 16 January 1555. This letter was written between 16 January and Bradford's first examination on 22 January 1555.
A sheet anchor was a particularly large and heavy anchor used to secure a ship during storms; normally it meant a last resort which could be relied on. But Bradford is using the term unusually here, saying that the goal of the authorities was to have the prisoners subscribe to catholic articles.
As in the previous letter to Saunders, Bradford is rejecting any idea of a compromise by subscribing to articles not directly contradicted by the Bible.

As Foxe explains in a marginal note, Bradford is saying that he will be taken to Lancashire by soldiers to be burned, just as the early Christian martyr Ignatius was escorted to Rome by soldiers and cast to leopards in the arena.
For my farewell therefore, I write and send this vnto you, trusting shortly to see you where we shall neuer bee seperated. In the meane season I will not cease, as I haue done, to commende you to our father of heauen. And that you would so do by mee, I most hartely praie euery
