¶ Here folowe likewise their aunswears in a general, made to the articles aboue rehearsed.
Commentary   *   Close

This document almost certainly came from one of Bonner's court books, now unfortunately lost.

And first concerning the first article, in beleuyng there is a Catholike Church.

MarginaliaAunswere to the first Article.TO the first article they alogether agreeyng, affirmed the same to be true: Iohn Tudson & Tho. Browne further addyng, that the churche of England as it was at that present vsed, was no part of the true Catholike church.

Concerning the second article, that there be in the church seuen sacraments.

MarginaliaTo the 2. Article. To the seconde article they aunsweared, that they acknowledged but only two Sacramentes in Christes catholike Churche, that is to say, Baptisme, and the Supper of the Lord: Iohn Went and Tudson affirmyng that the sacrament of the altar, as it is vsed, is an Idol, and no Sacrament at al.

Concerning the third article, that they were first baptised in the fayth of the Catholike church, professing

by their godfathers the profession of the same. &c.

MarginaliaTo the third Article. To the third article they agreed and confessed all to be true, that they were baptised in the faith of Christ and of the church then taught: and afterward duryng the tyme of K. Edward the sixt, they hearing the Gospell preached, and the truth opened, folowed the order of religion and doctrine then vsed and set forth in the raigne of the sayde kyng Edwarde.

Cōcerning the fourth article, that they for the space of certaine yeres did ratifie or allow, & not depart from any part of the profession of the same Church.

MarginaliaTo the 4. Article. To this fourth article they granted also & agreed: Iohn Went adding moreouer, that about seuen yeres past, he thē beyng about twenty yeres of age, began to mislike certayne things vsed in the Church of England, as the ministration of the sacrament of the altar: likewise all the ceremonies of the sayd churche, & dyd likewise at that present tyme mislike the same, as they were vsed, although his godfathers and godmothers promised for hym the contrary. MarginaliaThe fayth which they were Baptised in, vvas in the name of the Father, the Sonne, and the holy Ghost, beleuing the Articles of the Creede, vvith promise made to abrenounce the Deuill, the flesh, and the vvorld: of the vvhiche fayth their Godfathers and Godmothers vvere suerties for them, and in this fayth they continue still. As for other ceremonies & abuses of the Churche, they neuer made any promyse in their Baptisme.

Iohn Tudson added also in muche like sort and sayde, that when he came to the yeares of discretion, that is, about nyne yeares past, beyng about eighteene yeares of age, he dyd mislike the doctrine & religion then taught and set forth in the Church of Englande, sauyng in kyng Edwardes tyme, in whose tyme the Gospell was truely set foorth: and further sayde, that the doctrine set foorth in the Queenes raigne, was not agreeable to Gods woorde, nor yet to the true Catholike Churche that Christ speaketh of. &c.

Isabell Foster with other graunted, addyng likewise, and saying to the sayde foure articles, that shee continued in the same fayth and Religion which shee was baptised in, after shee came to the yeares of discretion, as other common people dyd, howbeit, blyndly and without knowledge, tyll the raigne of kyng Edward the sixt: at whiche tyme shee hearyng the Gospell truely preached and opened to the people, receyued therupon the faith and religion then taught and set foorth. &c.

Concernyng the fift Article, that they of late yeares haue swarued and gone away, misliked, and spoken against the profession of the same church, at lest some parte thereof, especially the sacrifice of the Masse, the Sacramente of the aultar, and the authoritie of the Church of Rome.

To the fift article they answeared, the same to be true, accordyng to the contentes thereof: Thomas Whittell adding moreouer, that he had swarued and gone awaye, not in whole, but in part, not from the whole Catholik Churche, but from the Churche of Rome in speaking againste the Masse, the sacrifice therof, and the See of Rome.

Ioane Lashford (aliâs Ioane Warne) graunting with the other the sayde article, addeth moreouer, MarginaliaTo swarue from the corruptions of the Sea of Rome, and sacrifice of the Masse is not to goe frō the Catholicke Church of Christ.that shee neuer hytherto swarued or wente awaye, nor yet dooth, from anye parte of Christes Catholike fayth and Religion: but saith, that from the tyme shee was eleuen yeares of age, shee hath misliked the Sacrifice of the Masse, the Sacrament of the altar, and the authoritie of the See of Rome, with the Doctrine thereof, because they be againste Christes Catholike church and the right faith of the same.

Bartlet Grene answering with the other to this article, addeth, & saith, that hee swarued not from the Catholike faith, but only from the church of Rome. &c.

Concerning the sixt article, that they refuse to be reconciled to the vnitie of the said church of Rome.

MarginaliaTo the 6. Article. To the sixt article, they aunsweare and confesse the same to be true, rendring the cause thereof, because (say they) the same Church and doctrine therein set forth and taught, disagreeth from the vnitie of Christes woord, and the true catholike faith. &c.

Wherunto Bartlet Grene answered, that he is contented to be recōciled to the vnitie of Christes catholike church,MarginaliaThe Catholicke Church and the Church of Rome are 2. thinges. but not of the church of Rome.

In like maner added also Iohn Went.

Concerning the seuenth article, that they refuse to come to heare Masse, and to receiue the said sacrament callyng it an Idol. &c.

MarginaliaTo the 7. Article. To the seuenth article, they answeare and confesse the contents therof to be true, geuing withal the reason & cause of this their so doing, for that the Masse with the sacramēt therof, as it was then vsed & set forth in the churche of England, MarginaliaThe Masse dissonant from the word of the Gospell.is dissonant to the woord & teaching of the Gospel. &c.
