MarginaliaThe fourth braunch.4. The fourth braūch is, to teach and informe vs (to whō these benefites of Christes Passion and victory do apperteine) by what meanes the same is applyed and redoūdeth vnto vs: MarginaliaFaith onely the meane cause of saluation & nothyng els.which meanes is onely one, that is, onely fayth in Christ Iesu, and no other thyng. Whiche fayth it pleaseth almyghtie God to accept for righteousnes. And this righteousnes it is, whiche onely standeth before God and none other, as we are playnly taught by the Scriptures, and especially by the doctrine of S. Paule. Whiche righteousnes thus rising of fayth in Christ, S. Paule calleth the righteousnes of God, where he speakyng of hym selfe, vtterly refuseth the other righteousnes whiche is of the law, that he might be found in him, not hauyng his owne righteousnes, which is of the law, but the rightuousnes of Christ, which is of fayth. Phil. 3. MarginaliaPhil. 3.
The rightuousnes of the law.
Againe, the sayd Apostle writyng of the Iewes, whiche sought for righteousnes and found it not: and also of the Gentiles whiche sought not for it, and yet found it, sheweth the reason why: because (sayth he) the one sought it as by workes and the law, and came not to it, who not knowyng the righteousnes of God, and seeking to set vp their owne righteousnes, did not submit thēselues to the righteousnes whiche is of God: Marginalia The rightuousnes of the Gospell. The other, which were the Gentiles, and sought not for it, obteined righteousnes, that righteousnes whiche is of fayth. &c. Rom. 9. MarginaliaRom. 9.Also in an other place S. Paule in the same Epistle writyng of this righteousnes which commeth of fayth, calleth it the righteousnes of God, in these wordes: Whom God (sayth he) hath set vp for a propiciation by fayth in his bloud, whereby to make manifest the righteousnes, which is of him selfe in toleratyng our sinnes. &c. Rom. 3. MarginaliaThe place of S. Paule. Rom. 3. expounded.
Rom. 3.
By the which righteousnes it is euident, that S. Paule meaneth the righteousnes of fayth, which almightie God now reueleth and maketh manifest by preachyng the Gospell. MarginaliaThe rightuousnes of fayth, why it is called Gods rightuousnes.Wilt thou see yet more playnly this rightuousnes of God how it is taken in S. Paule, for the righteousnes of fayth, & therfore is called the righteousnes of God, because it is imputed onely of God to fayth, and not deserued of man? In the same Epistle to the Romanes and in the 3. chap. aforesaid, his wordes be manifest: MarginaliaRom. 3.The righteousnes of God (sayth he) is by fayth of Iesus Christ, in all, and vpon all that doe beleue. &c.

MarginaliaA lesson out of S. Paules doctrine, of all Christians to be obserued.Wherfore who soeuer studyeth to be accepted with God and to be found rightuous in his sight, let him learne diligently by the doctrine of S. Paule to make a difference & a separation, as farre as from heauen and earth, betwene these two, that is, betwene the righteousnes of workes, & righteousnes of fayth: and in any wise beware he bryng no other meanes for hys iustification, or remissiō of his sinnes, but onely fayth apprehendyng the body or person of Christ Iesus crucified. For as there is no way into the house but by the doore, so is there no commyng to God but by Christ alone, whiche is by fayth. And as the mortall body, without bodely sustenaunce of bread and drinke can not but perish: so the spirituall soule of man hath no other refreshing, but onely by fayth in the body and bloud of Christ, whereby to be saued. With this fayth the Idolatrous Gentiles apprehended Iesus Christ, and receaued therby righteousnes. MarginaliaThe writynges of S. Paule, full of the name of Christ Iesus. And likewise in the writynges of S. Paule, how often do we heare the name of Christ almost in euery iij. or fourth lyne, where he still repeteth: MarginaliaBelief onely in Christ saueth. In Christo Iesu, per Christum Iesum, Per Iesum Christum Dominū nostram &c. Qui credunt in ipso &c. Omnes qui credunt in eo &c. Credentes in illo, in eum, credentes illi, in nomen eius, in nomine Domini nostri Iesu Christi &c. Beleue (sayth S. Paule to the Iaylor) in the Lord Iesus, and thou shalt be saued & thy whole house &c. Act. 16.MarginaliaAct. 16.

MarginaliaThe personall cause of saluation. Thus then thou seest, as the Passion of Christ is onely the efficient or personall cause immediate, of our saluation: MarginaliaThe instrumētall cause.so is fayth onely the instrumentall or meane cause that maketh the merites of Christ to vs auaylable. MarginaliaHow faith iustifieth. For as the Passion of Christ serueth to none but such as do beleue: so neither doth fayth as it is onely a bare qualitie or action in mans mynde, it selfe iustifie, vnles it be directed to the body of Christ crucified, as to his obiect, of whom it receaueth all his vertue. MarginaliaChrist the onely obiect of fayth which iustifieth. And therfore these ij. must alwayes ioyntly concurre together, fayth, and Christ Iesus crucified. MarginaliaExample of the brasen Serpent. As for example, when the people of Israell were byd of Moses to looke vp to the brasen Serpent, neither could the Serpent haue helped them, except they had looked vp, nor yet their lookyng vpward haue profited them, vnles they had directed their eyes vpon the sayd Serpent, as the onely obiect set vp to the same purpose for them to behold. So our fayth in like case directed to the body of Iesus our Sauiour is onely the meanes whereby Christes merites are applyed vnto vs, and we now iustified before God, accordyng to the doctrine of S. Paule, who in expresse wordes, MarginaliaWhat fayth is by S. Paule.definyng to vs what this fayth is, and how it iustifieth, sayth: If thou shalt confesse with thy mouth the Lorde Iesus, and beleue with thy hart, that God raysed him from death, thou shalt be saued &c. Rom. 10. MarginaliaRom. 10.Besides this what action or qualitie so euer is in man, either hope, charitie, or any other kynd of fayth and beleuyng, be it neuer so true, except it apprehendeth this obiect (whiche is) the body of Christ, the sonne of God, it serueth not to iustification. And that is the cause why we adde this particle, Onely, to fayth, and say: MarginaliaFaith onely.that faith, Onely, in Christ iustifieth vs, to exclude all other actions, qualities, giftes, or workes in man, from the cause of iustifiyng, for so much as there is no other knowledge nor gift giuen of God to man, be it neuer so excellent, that can stand before the iudgement of God to iustification, or wherunto any promise of saluation is annexed, but onely this fayth, lookyng vp to the brasen Serpent, that is, to the body of Christ Iesus for vs crucified.

MarginaliaDiuers sortes of beleuyng.
The Turkes faith.
As for example, when the Turke sayth, that he beleueth in one lyuing God that made heauen and earth, his belief therin is true, yet it iustifieth hym not, because it lacketh the right obiect, which is Christ. MarginaliaThe Iewes fayth. So when the Iewe sayth that he beleueth in one God maker of heauē & earth, & beleueth also the same God to be omnipotēt, mercyfull, iust, & true of promise, and that he hath elected the seede of Abraham: true it is that he beleueth, and yet all this serueth hym not, because Christ the sonne of God is not ioyned withall. And though the sayd Iew should be neuer so deuout in hys prayers, or charitable in his almose, or precise in keeping the law, and beleued neuer so stedfastly that he is elect to be saued: MarginaliaEuery truth may be beleued but the beleuing of euery truth saueth not.yet is he neuer the nearer to saluation for all this, so lōg as his fayth is not grounded vpon that head cornerstone, which is the person and body of Christ Iesus the true Sauiour. MarginaliaThe Papistes fayth. After like sort, it may also be sayd of the Papist, whē he sayth that he is Baptised, and beleueth in the father, the sonne, and the holy ghost, three persons and one God, and also confesseth Iesus Christ to be the sonne of God, whiche dyed for our sinnes, and rose agayne for our rightuousnes &c. his belief therin is true, and in deede would saue hym, if he dyd stay his saluatiō in this fayth, and vpon Christes his Sauiour, MarginaliaOnely.Onely, accordyng to the promise & grace of God, and go no farther. But that he doth not: for neither doth he admitte Christ onely to be his perfect Sauiour without þe helpe of other patrons, heades, aduocates, & mediatours, nor yet permitteth hys fayth in Christ, Onely, to be the meanes of his iustification, MarginaliaHope, & charitie be no partes of our iustification, nor causes to make the merites of Christ ours.but setteth vp other bymeanes, as hope, charitie, sacrifice of the Masse, confession, penaūce, MarginaliaThe causes of our saluation distincted.satisfaction, merites, & pardons, supposing thereby to worke his iustification before God, cōtrary to the word of promise, to the Gospell of grace, & to the doctrine of S. Paule, wher-
