K. Henry.5. The martyrdome of Hierome of Prage.

perseuere and continue in the veritie of that fayth. And if that he should presume at any tyme to hold opiniō or preach contrary thereunto, that he would submit himselfe to the triall and truth of the Canons, and be bound to perpetuall punishment. And this his profession written with his own hand, he deliuered vp vnto the holy Councell. Many dayes after his sayd profession and abiuration, as a dogge returnyng vnto his vomite, to the intent he might openly vomite vp the most pestilent poyson whiche had long lurked and layen hid in his breast, he required and desired that he might be openly heard before the Councell. The whiche beyng graunted vnto him, he affirmed, sayd, and professed before the whole Synode, beyng publikely gathered together, that he had wickedly consented and agreed to the sentence and iudgement of the condemnation of the sayd Wickleffe and Hus, and that he had most shamefully lyed in approuyng and allowyng the sayd sentence, neither was he ashamed to confesse that he had lyed: yea he dyd also reuoke and recant his confession, approbation and protestation, which he had made vpon their condemnation, affirmyng that he neuer at any tyme had read any errours or heresie in the bookes and treatises of the sayd Wickleffe and Hus. Albeit he had before confessed it, and it is euidently proued that he dyd diligently study, read and preach their bookes, wherein it is manifest that there are contained many errours and heresies. Also the sayd Maister Hierome did professe as touchyng the Sacrament of the aultar, and the transubstantiātion of the bread into the body of Christ, that he doth hold and beleue as the church doth hold & beleue, saying also that he doth geue more credite vnto S. Augustine, and the other Doctours of the Church, thē vnto Wickleffe and Hus. It appeareth moreouer by the premisses, that the said Hierome is an adherēt and maintainer of the sayd Wickleffe & Hus, & their errours, and both is and hath bene a fauourer of them. Wherfore the said sacred Synode determineth the sayd M. Hierome as a rotten and withered braunche not growyng vpon the vyne, to be cut of and cast out. The sayd Synode also pronounceth, declareth and condemneth him as an hereticke, and drowned in all kynde of heresies, excommunicate and accursed, leauyng him vnto the arbitrement and Iudge-MarginaliaHierome geuen to the secular power.ment of the secular iudge, to receiue iust and due punishment, accordyng to the qualitie of so great an offence: The sayd sacred Synode notwithstandyng intreatyng that the sayd iudge would moderate his sentence of iudgement without perill of death.

Hierome, by deuilish papistes.The which sentence so geuen before his face, and ended a great & long miter of paper was brought vnto hym, painted about with red deuels: the whiche when he beheld and saw, throwyng away his hoode vpon the ground amongest the Prelates, he tooke the miter, and put it vpon his head: saying, Our Lord Iesu Christ, when as he should suffer death for me most wretched sinner, did weare a crowne of thorne vpon his head: and I for his sake in stede of that crowne, will willinglye weare this miter and cappe. MarginaliaM. Hierome went singing vnto his martyrdome.After that he was ledde out of the sayd Church to the place of execution, when he was goyng out of the Churche with a cherefull coūtenance & a loud voyce, lifting hys eyes vp into heauen, he began to sing, Credo in vnum deum, as it is accustomed to be song in þe church. Afterward as he passed a long, he did sing some Canticles of the Church. The which beyng ended, in the entryng out of the gate of the city, as men go vnto Gothlehem, he did sing this hympne, fælix namque. MarginaliaM. Hierome prayeth.And that respond beyng ended, after he came to the place of execution where as Maister Iohn Hus before had suffred death innocently, kneeling downe before an image which was lyke vnto the picture of M. Iohn Hus, which was there prepared to burne Maister Hierome, he made a certayne deuout prayer.

Foxe, like the predecessors on whose work he built, accorded the honour of visual presence to Hus's co-martyr, Jerome of Prague (both of whom were represented in the handful of large woodcuts included in the period from Wyclif to Luther). The same considerations and range of possible influences apply to the woodcut of Jerome of Prague as to its twin, of Hus. His bearded, long-haired visage, contrasting with that of Hus, descends through the visual sources just described, but Foxe's woodcut, unlike that in Flacius, gives him no heretic's hat. His prepared pyre and official attendants share the seemingly continental features noticed in the image of Hus. As self-evidently paired depictions it seems reasonable to attribute similar influences on both. (See references for preceding entry). CUL copy: The detailing of Jerome's torso is impressive: it looks like flesh. He has brown hair and a substantial brown beard. There is also some impressive, detailed shading of the faggots on the pyre. The flames (in orange and red), however, and the colouring of the horse nearest the front of the picture (in a pale orange) are very unrealistic. Note that what little can be seen of the linen cloth placed on his person is coloured in white. WREN copy: this is another example of poorly executed colouring. There is hardly any shading provided to the faggots; they appear monotone on the pyre. Also, there is too much detailing of the features of those depicted; the end result here is that the people look as though they are wearing stage makeup.
