K. Henry.5. The bloudy Inquisition of Pope Martine.

MarginaliaI. Hus expoundeth this article with this distinct.
non ratione meriti, sed ratione officij.
office sake, for thē ought a kyng to be called by his office the most holy one: and hangmen with other such officers also were to be called holy, yea the deuill himself ought to be called holy, for as much as he is gods officer.

22 If the pope liue contrary vnto Christ, although he clime vp by right and lawfull election according to the common custome of men: yet notwithstanding should he otherwise clyme then by Christ: yea though we admit þt he should enter by the election principally made by God. For Iudas Iscarioth was lawfully elect of God Christ Iesus to hys bishoprike and yet came not he the same way he ought to do into the shepefold.

MarginaliaI Hus declareth his mynde touching this article sufficiently before.23 The condemnation of 45. Articles of Iohn Wickliffe by the doctors made, is vnreasonable, wicked, and naught, & the cause by them alleged is fayned: that is, that none of thē are catholike, but euery one of them hereticall, erronious, or slaunderous.

24 Not for that the electours, or the most part of thē haue consēted together with liuely voyce according to the custom of men vpon the person of any, therfore, that person is lawfully elect, or therfore is the true and manifest successour and vicar of Peter the Apostle, MarginaliaElection maketh not the sucessour of Peter: but imitation.or of any other the Apostles in the ecclesiasticall office. Wherfore, whether the electors haue either well or euill made their election, it behoueth vs to beleue the same, by the workes of hym that is elected. For in that that euery one worketh more meritoriously to the profite of the Church, he hath so much the more greater authoritie from God.

25 There is not so much as one sparke of appearance that there ought to be one head, ruling and gouerning the church in spirituall causes, MarginaliaOne head of the vniuersall church beside Christ, hath no foundation in all scripture.which should alwayes be conuersant in the church militāt: For Christ without any suche mōstrous heds, by his true disciples sparsed through the whole world, could better a great deale rule his Church.

26 The Apostles and faithfull priestes of God, haue right worthely in things necessary to saluatiō gouerned þe church before the popes office tooke place, & so might they do agayn by like possibilitie vntill Christ came to iudgement, if the Popes office should fayle.
