Examined touching a drink ministered to Anne Lloyd by Richard Bate his man and wherewith was it made and who bought that stuff, saith he bought not the stuff neither did make the drink nor knoweth not how the same was made nor did not see it nor knoweth not afterwards, examined whether this examinate or his said man did try taste… of the said drink saith he this examinate never drank thereof neither yet did the said Bate drink thereof… confesseth there was in the said drink a dram of coloquintida… had by his man at Adam Bles's shop as his wife declared to this examinate.
Examined touching the same, saith that the said Anne Lloyd hath dwelled with this examinate by the space of 3 years past come May next and by all the same time did not keep her bed for any sickness at any time, yet saith some time she had the head ache, and saith that the said Anne the 10th of this February feeling herself pained with the head ache made her known thereof to Thomas Mercer barber and willed his advice therein, and saith that the said Thomas Mercer answered he had dwelling with him a skillful and Cunning man who in short time could help her of that pain and thereupon this examinate and the mother of the said Anne the said 10th of February did agree with the said Mercer for 6s 8d that saith his man shall Ccure and heal the said Anne of… her pain which cure the said Thomas Mercer did then faithfully promise to heal and then concluded the the said Anne should remove from this examinate’s house to her said mother’s house which she did upon the Thursday then next following and saith that before the said Anne removed from this examinate’s house the said Thursday Thomas Mercer aforesaid and his man came into this examinate’s house and brought with them a drink for the said Anne… which Anne after the drink received departed out of the said Mercer’s sight and then after… her departure, this examinate saith that the said Thomas Mercer spake these words… I would not for 40s have drunken of that drink for (said he) it was rank poison, to whom this examinate answered god forbid and with this, this examinate saith that the said Mercer appointed the said Anne to go to her mother’s and keep her warm and promised thither to come to her whither she went and there languished.
Examined touching the same, saith that she this examinate the 13th of February in the morning saw the said Anne very merry going to Mr Roland Wright his house to be his valentine, and saith that afterwards about 9 or 10 of the clock in that morning the said Anne Lloyd came to this examinate’s house and declared to this examinate that the said Mercer and his man had ministered a medicine unto her and bade her walk abroad and keep herself warm within that house until they came thither to her, and saith that the said Anne took this examinate’s mantle about her and walk within that house… examined what meat or drink that day at this examinate’s house had the said Anne, saith none at all saving a posset of ale which ale this examinate sent for to the said George Bellin’s house and there was it had, and saith that from 4 of the clock the said Thursday the said Anne vomited diverse times shortly after every time that she drank of the said posset and this examinate saith that about 8 of the clock that night the said Anne first became sick… and vomited… This examinate answered nothing saving posset of ale wherewith they liked and bade this examinate give her what meat and drink she listed and saith that thereupon that same day and hour the said Mercer’s man did anoint the said Anne with an ointment which he had in a box all parts of the said Anne saving that this examinate did not see him handle her belly and thereupon did lay the said Anne in a bath and did put 2 brick stones to the calf of her legs and a pot of hot water to her feet in an earthen bottle and a chafing dish with… coals and perfume and did blow… that perfume into her mouth and because she did not open her mouth wide enough the said Mercer’s man smote her upon the head with his hand and thereupon departed and that same day saith the said Anne had 4 or 5 stools and in the evening of the said Friday the said Mercer and his man came again to visit the said Anne and demanded what meat the said Anne had taken and this examinate answered nothing but an ale… which her mistress send her and bread and milk which milk the said Mercer said was not good for her and so for that day they departed and this examined saith that the said Anne that Friday at night was very sick and began to speak evil.
Examined what apothecary wares Thomas Mercer or Richard Bate his man lately bought of this examinate saith upon Wednesday the 13th of February the said Bate bought of this examinate a pennyworth of coloquintida after 16d the ounce which he received and did weigh half a dram being in the aforenoon of that day to her remembrance and more nor other thing did not they nor either of them buy nor had of this examinate of a long space.
Examined touching the same, saith that he this examinate being in the house of George Bellin the 14th of this February being this day fortnight, saw the said Thomas Mercer and his said man coming into that house and saw then the said Mercer’s man minister a drink to the said Anne Lloyd… Examined what he heard Thomas Mercer say to George Bellin his wife after that he had ministered the medicine to the said Anne Saith the he heard the said Mercer say he would not for 40s have drunken it for there was rank poison in it which words were spoken the [blank] day of the month of February last past.
Examined in what order he ministered the medicine unto the said Anne Smith one dram of coloquintida, 3 ounces and more ale… examined whether his said master did stand by when the said stuff and drink was made saith he did and did see this examinate compound the same, examined whether his master did taste of the said drink or that he this examinate did taste thereof saith he this examinate did taste thereof, but his said master saw him not drink thereof.
