Deposeth and saith that Upon Thursday night last past this deponent and one William Bennett were appointed watchmen to watch that night in St John’s ward, and performing their watch at the further end of Cow Lane about eleven of the clock at night the watch at the Barres brought one John Almond and two other journeymen shoemakers home to the house of the said Almond in Cow Lane and Mr John Francis hearing them coming with the watch and being in his own house ready to bed called at the street window of his chamber and said what knaves are there where are the constables where art thou Motteram (meaning Hugh Motteram) thou art a false knave, thou art more fitter to be laid in a pair of stocks than to be constable with many other railing speeches and exclaiming words against the said Hugh Motteram and the watch which he now cannot in certain remember.
Sworn and examined deposeth and saith… as William Snell hath formerly deposed.
