Saith he was born at Hay in the parish of Grefford and country of Denbigh and hath continued in service… and this examinate came towards Chester about 6 of the clock in the evening, that in Eccleston Lane … he met an person whom he afterwards slew, who he say he did never know nor see before to his knowledge, neither knew who he did belong unto nor what was his name, and that upon their meeting the said person asked him this examinate whether he saw a horse and panniers, and this examinate answered he did not, and the said man then said to this examinate Thou art blind, and thereupon they both came together towards Chester and in their coming diverse speeches passed between them the said man who was afterwards slain… and being lastly examined whether at the committing of the said fact he was distempered with drink or drink utterly denieth the same, but confesseth that he was drinking yesterday morning in the house of Thomas Elcocke tailor in the Holt in company of John Booth... and the said Thomas Elcocke that he spent here in drink 6d: but knoweth not what the rest of his company spent nor how much drink in all.
