Was late a soldier within the realm of Ireland and came thence this sevenight and came to Chester one Friday last and did lie at Widow Duddon’s, and that he was drinking yesterday in the afternoon with six or seven shoemakers that were there, and a woman that was a shoemaker his wife with one other that was said to be a married, and saith they drank some… cans or quarts of ale and saith that there was one quart and one can as he thinketh, and that the ale they drank he knoweth not what price it was of that he paid not anything as yet for the same, and saith the cause he came to Mr Mayor was for that one of the said shoemakers did take his sword and detained it from him, and saith his name is Mathew but knoweth not his other name, and that formerly he paid a penny the quart for the said ale and further is not examined but that he acknowledgeth he was drunk and could not well make his complaint when he came to Mr Mayor.
