Examined saith that this examinate and the said John ap Hugh being drinking together in Thomas Whitell’s house, the said John ap Hugh did send for the said Morris, and thereupon the said Morris came in to them and there the said John and Morris had some speeches between them concerning Mr Brereton’s man who had given the said Morris a box on his ear, and of a quarrel between them and saith that they said they would go to Boughton but whether with purpose to fight with Mr Brereton’s man or no this examinate knoweth not… and at Robert Thornton’s house did come into the company of the said Morris and the said John ap Hugh and thereupon the said John and others did fall out and more saith not.
Examined saith that yesterday about 5 of the clock in the evening one Morris Mr Hockenhall his man came to this examinate and desired him to go along with him as far as Boughton, and going both together the said Morris told this examinate that there was a quarrel between him and one Griffith Mr Owen Brereton’s man, and that they appointed to fight, whereupon the said Morris and this examinate went to the house of Thomas Hitchens in Boughton, and the said Morris did desire a woman that dwelt in the said house to go to Mr Brereton’s house, and to tell the said Griffith that he would speak with him, who refused to go for him, and thereupon the said Morris and this examinate went both of them to Robert Thornton’s house, and being there drinking together one David Owen Mr John Barnes his man, came in presently after them, and having called for some beer the said Morris did send for the said Griffith to speak with him and to drink with them, who thereupon came in unto them, and within a while after that they had drunk together, the said Owen did cast a cup of beer in Mr Brereton’s man’s face, and then the said Griffith went out of the house and the said David Owen after him, and as the said David was going by Mr Brereton his house, the said Griffith met him with a pikell in his hand, and meeting together they closed and the said David did take the said pikell out of his hands (and saith that the said Morris had a short sword upon him) and more saith not.
