The said informer upon his oath informeth and saith that about five of the clock in the afternoon of this present day he this informer (being in company with Henry Hall innholder and Richard Francis Barber in the house of George Orton Saddler) heard the said Richard Francis speak and upper these words following (to wit) that there is no good government since the kind came in, and this deponent bade him instance where there was any bad government and the said Richard Francis replied in Chester, and further the said Richard Francis said, that the Mayor (meaning the Mayor or this city that now is) is drunk three times in one day, and go to him now and you will find him drunk, and Sheriff Caddock will be as drunk as he (meaning the said Mayor) Only Harvey the bricklayer (meaning Sheriff Harvey) bears out... Whereupon this informer said to the said Richard Francis, that he would make his poles to jingle (meaning he would cause his barber’s poles to be taken down) and thereupon the said Francis Replied and said I hope your country conscience will not do so.
Upon his oath Informeth and saith that at the time aforesaid he heard the said Richard Francis speak these words following (vizt) that there is no good government since the King came in, and being asked in what place, said, in Chester, and further said that the Mayor (meaning the Mayor of this City that now is) is drunk three times in a week, and go to him now and you will find him (meaning the said Mayor) drunk, and further this deponent saith not.
