Upon his oath deposeth and saith that upon Wednesday night being the 17th of June 1685 he this deponent being in company with Robert Wright, William Reece the younger and Richard Hiccock both of the said City at the house of William Reece the elder in the Eastgate Street of the said City one Charles Sale of the said City butcher came into the company of him this deponent and the said Robert Wright William Reece and Richard Hiccock; and this deponent saith that he the said Charles Sale did then take up a glass of ale and begun the Duke of Monmouth’s health and whither said he had… an horse or would borrow one this deponent knows not well whether to go to Halliwell and would see or meet the said Duke of Monmouth.
