One Church Dobbs brewer bound over by Sir Nathaniel Bacon for abusing of me… I having occasion to search for one at Cley Fair I went to the Widow Mangle's to see if I could find him there, and as I went in I met with Churche, Dobb's man, and I found Dobb and others of Blakeney drinking there and enquiring if they were all the company the hostess told me there was all and so I went away. And going out at the door Churche met with me again and said unto me that I had abused his friend and that I shall well know. I demanded who it was for I had not abused any to my knowledge. And he still continued in swearing that I had and that I shall well know it, insomuch as his master Dobb and all the rest of the company hearing him came to the door and when Dobb was come Churche said there is my friend whom you have abused, and that you shall well know. Whereupon Dobb answered that I had not abused him… And it came upon this for that I had received a warrant from the lieutenants to charge John Dobb and his mother to a petronel. I going thither to give them knowledge of it, his mother fell a-railing of me in words and said it was my doing; and likewise for that the said Dobb being laid to the subsidy more than he would be he charged me that all this was my doing and this was the cause that Churche had his quarrel against me… And if Churche allege that I spake to him about taking away any of my customers I protest and did not speak to him of any nor of anything else.
