This informant saith that on Wednesday in the last Sessions week at Manchester he was at the sign of the Red Lion in the Hanging Ditch in Manchester about ten o'clock at night with one other person and there came to him Jonathan Whitworth and told this informant one James Hulme desired to drink with him in the room that Hulme was in and this informant answered he knew nothing of James Hulme and that he would have nothing to do with them and Whitworth went back to Hulme as he supposeth and came to this informant again, and said Hulme desired to come to this informant and he said for that he might do as he pleased but he knew nothing of him upon which there came downstairs together to this informant and his friend with him the said Whitworth Hulme one John Clough and Joshua Wrightson and [sat] down to drink with this informant the said Hulme pretending he [coursed?] a coffer of his, this informant's friend left the company, and after drinking about an hour with the said Whitworth Hulme Clough and Wrightson this informant paid all or part of the reckoning and went to his horse at the door and they went along with him pretending to see him on horseback and come about him to help him on horseback and this informant went home and the next morning missed his purse which had in it nine or ten shillings in silver, and this informant went to the land lady at the Red Lion who said she was glad to see him and asked what money he left for Whitworth and Hulme and the rest offered her money that she saw in his hand taken by him out of his purse when he paid the reckoning, and Hulme came to this informant and told him he was sorry or it and this informant went to the Black Greyhound where Wrightson was in bed and Clough told him being there that the master of the house had half a crown of his money upon which he asked the Mrs of the house and she produced the half crown and owned to the best of his remembrance the said Hulme... had pawned it to her for seven pence half penny.
