Informeth that upon Tuesday was sevennight being the 18th of this instant September he together with one William Evence having had money given them for a largesse went to the house of Thomas Laskie an alehouse-keeper to drink and tarry there for the space of 2 hours, the weather being wet, and did expend there in all 14d. And saith there was in their company at that time but he and his fellow Evence, Laskie, and his wife, and they remained there until their master Anthony Simson called them away. And then this Evence and Cobb came from the alehouse about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, this Cobb going about his said master’s business not knowing how the said Evence spent his time until night, and about 8 or 9 of the clock the said Evence quarrelled with one Richard Bullard and stabbed him with his knife so that he presently died.
Examined saith that about 2 months since he was upon a Sabbath day at or near the house of Bartholomew Collison abovesaid and being in the yard espied Mr Browne, clerk and James Ingeldew drinking in the alehouse and this being before divine service, he saith that the said Mr Browne and Ingledew came not to church and James Ingledew being examined thereupon saith that they were in the said alehouse all or most part of service time.
Informeth that he with some other company of Houghton about a dozen of them were drinking in the said Laskie’s house most part of the same night. And saith that he came away from the said Laskie’s house about 10 of the clock and left still drinking in the said Laskie’s house all the men of Houghton but knew not who they were nor what time they went away from thence
Confesseth these informations to be true in effect, saving that he saith he doth not know that the party whom Starling speaketh of was drunk in his house.
Informeth that upon Sunday the 5th of September they were at the house of Bartholomew Collison alehouse-keeper of Harpley abovesaid, and asking for a pair of cards, Anne the daughter of the said Collison brought them a pair of cards with which they played at a game called whist for a jug of beer, which was brought them in a stone jug or pot which held near 3 pints and no more, for which this examinant James Ingledewe did pay 2d, he having lost the set at cards. And the said examinant saith that upon the said Sunday they played only one set. But being demanded how often before they had played at cards in the same alehouse upon the Sabbath or other days he said he never played there upon the Sabbath or other days but upon the weekdays he played there once before at cards for beer, the alehouse-keeper being then in the house.
