That upon the second day of January last past before this his examination the arlate Mr John Gibbs came over from his own house to the Popinjay gate in Tombland in Norwich, and asked who is that, that have abused me, and some person told him that it was Mr Verdon, then the said Mr Gibbs said if it be Verdon he is the son of a whore, I am as good a gentleman as am is in the chamber, and I never murdered any man upon the road, and he is a great rascal, which words were spoken in the street before the gate of the Popinjay in Norwich in the hearing of this deponent and of Mr Thomas Gosling his contest... that the words were spoken between the hours of two and three in the afternoon of the 2nd January aforesaid on which day two of His Majesty's drummers did beat their drum at the gate of Captain Gibbs his house, and came from thence to the Popinjay and then Mr Verdon told the drummers that Mr Gibbs was a rascal and that he was neither captain nor gent: and told the drummers that it was pity that their coats were not pulled over their ears, and it was pity that they were not secured.
That upon the second day of January last past before this his examination the arlate Mr John Gibbs came to the window of the house of the Popinjay in Norwich, and said these words As for Verdon all the country know what he is he is a rascal and the son of a whore and as for my part I swear to murder anyone upon the highway which words were spoken in the street before the Popinjay upon Tombland in Norwich in the hearing of this deponent as he looked out at the window and this deponent believeth in the hearing of Firman Wisseter who was then at the door.
That upon the 13th day of January last past before this his examination the arlate John Gibbs did in a railing and abusive manner say these words or the like in effect to the said Mr Verdon you are a rascally rogue, a murdering rogue and the son of a whore, which words were spoken in the house of this deponent John Taylor situated in the precincts of the cathedral church of Norwich in the presence and hearing of this deponent and of William Linton and Richard Peirson.
That upon the 13th day of January last past before this his examination the arlate Mr John Gibbs did in the house of John Taylor situated in the precincts of the cathedral church of Norwich in a railing and abusive manner say these words to the producent Mr Verdon or the like in effect you are a rascal and the son of a whore in the presence and hearing of this deponent and John Taylor... the words were spoken about 12 of the clock of the day before deposed, in the hall of the house before deposed.
That on a day in the sessions week holden at Norwich last past before his examination, the arlate Mr John Gibbs did in a railing and abusive manner in the house of John Taylor situate in the close at Norwich in the presence and hearing of John Taylor and John Breeze and of this deponent say to the producent Mr Verdon these words or the like in effect you are a pitiful rascal and the son of a whore... the words were spoken about ten of the clock in the forenoon in the hall of the house.
