That upon the Friday night before Shrove Tuesday last past one Catherine Reeve who was some thing of kin to this deponent's husband and being at her house at Rope was here brought to bed of a bastard child and in the midst of her extremity being asked by this deponent who was her father thereof answered several times that Lawrence Smith and none other was the father of it and it is common report of all hereabout that the said Lawrence is the only father of the said bastard child.
That upon the Friday night before Shrove Tuesday last one Catherine Reeve being in labour of a bastard child at the house of Thomas Wright in Rope aforesaid was asked by this deponent and others that were then present where was the father of her child, to whom she several times replied that Thomas Smith and none other was the father thereof, meaning Lawrence Smith of Checkley. And it is commonly reported hereabouts that the said Smith is the father of the bastard child.
