Item they say that James Claier keeping an alehouse doth commonly use to go out of the church at time of the gospel and homily reading… Item the 26th day of August last past the said Swanbrook did also misuse the said curate openly in the said church immediately after service before the parishioners then being there present and called him naughty, drunken, and false priest, with many other indecent words… Item one James Claier doth commonly use every holy day when the priest is either at the gospel, or reading the homelies to go forth of the said church, and what his meaning is, it is unclear, but surely it is a very ill example to other young men in the parish: and if it be not reformed he is very likely to excuse others to do the same.
That it was certainly reported to this respondent that the said curate had spoken reproachful words by this respondent's father who did about fifteen years ago… much that this respondent and the said curate being together in the house of Richard Whitlow an alehouse this respondent demanded of the said curate whether he had spoken such words by his father, and he answered him that what he had spoken he would stand to, and in multiplying of words this respondent confesseth that he called the said curate knave and offered to fight with him at the same time, being about three quarters of a year ago after which time this respondent took the said curate for his friend.
