William Whitwell hath exercised the place of a reader within the chapel of Old Hutton for three or four years now last past and upwards until about a year and a half past... About four years ago or thereabouts William Whitwell took upon him to be a reader within the said chapel of Old Hutton... That this respondent being an inhabitant of that chapelry did for divers years afterwards give unto William Whitwell what he this respondent in his discretion though fitting, but this respondent saith, by virture of that to his best knowledge and remembrance this respondent never promised to give unto the said Whitwell any certain sum of money for reading in the said Chapel... This respondent finding the said William Whitwell to be given to drunkenness and to be troublesome to this respondent, this respondent desisted from giving anything for wages unto the said Whitwell for reading in the said Chapel for twenty years now last past.
