Of this deponent's certain knowledge Mr Croston the plaintiff hath been... for these six years accounted for a man of good name and fame and of honest life and conversation and never detected or accused of the crime of drunkenness until the controversy full our occasioning his suit... That Thomas Hammond as is arlate was elected and chosen churchwarden... This deponent and Hammond and the rest of the churchwardens with all or some of the sidemen did meet in the parish church of Bury in the year arlate and after conference had of the presentments to be made Thomas Hammond moved this deponent and the rest of the churchwardens to join with him in presenting the plaintiff for drunkenness or as a drunkard and this deponent and others unwilling to consent to that presentment and there being difference amongst them this deponent moved them to go on with other crimes presentable and leave it to be left and saith when the presentment was made... this deponent and others put their hands and names or marks to the same and after the same was so subscribed Thomas Hammond took the same and offering to add something more unto it this deponent asked him what he added unto it saying that what he writ there above his name would be taken for his... and Hamond confessed he was intervening John Croston's name... for a drunkard or drunkenness.
