Upon or about Wednesday the twenty third day of [May] last about eleven of the clock in the aforenoon, he [George Birchall] was prevailed with, and did join together in matrimony according to the form of matrimony [prescribed] in the liturgy, Richard Ranson of Wigan, pewterer, and Jane his wife, in the dwelling house of Raph Carlton of Wigan, pewterer (but without the knowledge of the said Raph, he being then from home, there being present only two children of the same Raph Carlton and his servant maid) without licence obtained or banns first published in order to the said matrimony.
Upon or about Wednesday the twenty third day of May last about eleven of the clock in the aforenoon, he [Richard Ranson] was joined in matrimony to the said Jane his wife, in the dwelling house of Raph Carlton of Wigan, pewterer, but without the knowledge of the said Raph he being then from home, by the ministry of George Birchall, Clerk Curate of Formby, there being present at the time and place aforesaid only two of the children of the aforesaid Raph Carlton under the age of sixteen as he verily believes and a servant maid of that house, he (Richard) having not procured any lawful licence or banns to be published thereunto.
