That upon Wednesday (next after the said feast of St Michael the Archangel before mentioned) being the fourth day of October last past in this present year 1643 or thereabouts, the said Jeffrey Croxton came to the said Ann Wilding's house, and told her, he never longed so much for anything as he did to see her… And further said unto her, if thou be mine I am thine, and urged or willed her to say the same words unto him, the which she did accordingly, and then the said Jeffrey Croxton having a cup of beer in his hand, did drink unto the said Ann, and said I pray God if may retreat my damnation if I do not marry thee before any other woman - breathing, whereto the said Ann replied and said, it may be that you never marry at all, then he swore again, and desired that drink might be a witness against him to damn him, if he did not marry her the said Ann before Christmas then next coming being Christmas last past, or words to that or the same effect… That upon a day, within one of the months mentioned… the said Jeffrey Croxton was in the house of the said Ann Wilding, in company with Mr Robert Ince and Mr William Dutton, and in their presence, he the said Jeffrey Croxton said, that she the said Ann Wilding was in his eyes one of the handsomest widows in Chester, then Mr Ince said will you have her, and the said Jeffrey Croxton testified with this oath, that before God he would marry her the said Ann Wilding, if thou would marry him, after that the said Ann Wilding blamed the said Jeffrey Croxton for acquainting Mr Ince with his mind, and he replied, he cared not if all the world were against him, he would have her the said Ann in her Smock, then all the said gentlewomen with all their wealth or words to that effect.
