That about Michaelmas last one Thomas Short Clerk who had served the place of curate of Macclesfield aforesaid by the space 30 years or more in all good sort to the liking of the said Chapelry was by the then mayor displaced from his room and office without unto or any sufficient causeā¦ The said Thomas Short clerk is a minister lawfully committed of sufficient learning and a man of good life and conversation. Francis Jackson hath taken upon him publicly to read all divine service to bury the dead and not only to make exposition of the chapters according to his own mind but also to read publicly that the Book of resolutions or some other book not allowed for public Service. That the said Francis Jackson is taken to be a [person] of bad conversation and scandalous life being he left off so many trades as maketh him contemptuous amongst his neighbours for he hath been first a butcher, a drover, a wine man, a button man, a trades man of Manchester ware vizt jerkins stockings and bags also a whittower. And many other courses hath taken upon wherein it seemed that god hath not blessed his labour and therefore is odious to be daily in the face of the congregation.
