Examined at whose request went he down towards the Castle upon Saturday last in the evening saith he went thither at the request of Robert Golborne who requested this examinate to bring with him such weapons as he had whereupon this examinate went to the place foresaid the said time and took with him sword and dagger and being there used to play at the football and drinking together… as for two hours or thereabouts in the company of William Allen Robert Golborne Charles Leech and William Brand of this City with others… Examined upon what occasion the said Robert Golborne moved this examinate to bring his weapons to the said place saith the said Golborne told this examinate that one stranger being as he said a Knight's servant went to have beaten John Golborne between that place and Mr Coles' house and for that purpose this examinate went down and met the said Robert Golborne at St Mary's Church and saith as he now remembreth 9 or 10 of them had swords daggers and bucklers. Examined whether John Golborne brother of the said Robert was in this examinate's Company saith he went from Mr Coles' house in company of the said John Golborne… and the others having brought the said John Golborne this examinate and the rest of his company some time played at the football and other times were drinking… And saith when the said John Golborne had ended his business in the Exchequer this examinate and the rest departed with their weapons went in company of the same John Golborne into his master's house. Examined whether at any time since he was in their company saith he was yesterday playing at the Wastrells on the backside of the said William Coles' in company of Mr Coles and Robert Golborne and three or four more. And upon further examination saith that Mr John Golborne son of Mr William Golborne of this city Humphrey Bromall and one Richard Vernon Mr Venables… were also in their company upon Saturday evening at the Castle aforesaid and there continued for the space aforesaid with their weapons as swords daggers and bucklers or part of them… Examined whether his master was spoken unto for this examinate's absence during the said time being his apprentice and also the market day saith he thinketh his master was spoken unto for the absence of this examinate at the request of the said Robert Golborne… Examined how he occupied himself upon Saturday evening last saith that he came into the company of the said persons or most of them upon some occasion and had with him sword and dagger as he is accustomed to carry being a young man and during such time… in quiet sort departed from them at Pepper Street end. Examined how many of them he knew saith none of them but the said John Golborne and William Richardson and the rest he kneweth not.
Examined and sworn saith that upon Saturday last in the evening the said Robert Golborne requested this examinate to give this examinate's man leave to end the said John Golborne from the hurt of one stranger between the house of the said Mr Coles and the Exchequer of Chester.
