Examined saith that he this examinate with divers others being in company with one Davies a scrivener at the house of John Taylor ironmonger upon Sunday last in the evening at supper heard the said Davies utter and say these words following viz I hope quickly and within this half year to see Mr Byfield meaning the City preacher rid out of town, and said that he understood not the Latin tongue for that before he came to this City he was but a school master and a malt man, and that he knew him well enough and said further he can make as good a sermon as Byfield and of that he would venture his neck and more truly… he remembreth not.
Examined and saith that the said Davies being at this examinate's house at supper upon Sunday night last he heard the said Davies say that Byfield was no scholar for he had been a maltster and that he would make a Sermon with Byfield for his neck and leave it to the judgement of the hearers, and that this examinate reproved him for his speeches and others likewise who then were present but notwithstanding the said Davies persisted in his speeches against the said Mr Byfield and said he would anger them all and more he remembreth not.
Examined saith that being also in company with the said Davies at supper upon Sunday night last at the house of the former examinate he heard him say that Byfield was no scholar for he had been a malt man and neither understood Hebrew Greek nor Latin… and wished that he should make a sermon with him for his neck, and said that he had sowen more sedition within the City than would be remained whilst this City stood and used… other undecent and opprobrious speeches against the said Mr Byfield which this examinate remembreth not but well knoweth that the rest of all the company then present were much displeased at him for the same and more saith not.
Examined saith that she was present at the house of the said John Taylor upon Sunday night last at supp where one Davies formerly named was there also present and then heard the said Davies say these words, we shall have a sermon tomorrow and another, whereupon someone in the company then demanded who should preach the next one and the said Davies answered I meaning himself would preach tomorrow and Mr Byfield upon Wednesday but I hope we shall be rid of him shortly and said that Byfield meaning Mr Byfield the preacher hath sown more sedition within this City than could be rooted out while this City stood, and said that Byfield was no scholar and… he could neither speak Hebrew Greek or Latin truly or words to that effect as this examinate did then conceive, and said that he was a maltster and a schoolmaster before he came thither and has not other means to live and said he would preach with him neck for neck whereupon Mr Parsons being then present said and answered you have no such utterance and that then the said Davies replied and said Byfield meaning the said Mr Byfield had a scurvy utterance, and that My Taylor in whose house they were, told the said Davies he would have no man depraved in his house and therefore wished him to be silent, but notwithstanding used other foul speeches as fool and ass towards some in the company then present who seemed to reprove him for such his evil behaviour and more cannot say.
