Examined saith that upon Sunday last he was in company with Robert Sprowston and his brother Arthur Sprowston, and divers others, amongst whom there was one Tillston who affirmed that Mr Byfield meaning Mr Byfield the preacher was a prophet, whereupon this examinate replied that Mr Byfield was as like a rogue as… a prophet: and also said further that he (meaning the said Mr Byfield) did make such a sermon as he could not justify but fled forth of the country… and saith likewise that he made the said sermon at Fotheringay in Northamptonshire about 3 years since or thereabouts and further saith not.
Sworn and examined deposeth and saith that upon Sunday evening last past he did hear John Halliwell utter these words against John Byfield the preacher viz Byfield is a rumagate rogue whereupon this examinate demanded whether the said Halliwell would stand to these words yea or no who answered that he would stand so and Justify the same and further saith not.
Deposeth and saith that upon Sunday in the evening last past he did hear the said Halliwell utter these speeches against Mr Byfield the preacher (although upon no occasion at all offered by this examinate or any other that he knoweth of) viz Byfield is a rumagate rogue and I will stand to it and did come out of Northamptonshire and so came to this City and made a sermon here which I deny not but it was a good sermon and by that means was well liked of in this city and further saith not.
