Sworn and examined saith that about 8 of the clocke upon Sunday night last past there came unto this examinate's house a young man about 18 years of age or thereabouts and knocked at the door of this examinate and this examinate's wife opened the door and this examinate did then ask the said boy from whence he came and he answered he came from Northwich that morning from the house of Widow Simcock there and was her servant and saith he had been a good while in the City and the reason he came so late to his lodging was for that he came 6 miles out of his way and been at the Lord Bishop's house in Chester drinking with the servants in the house there, and the said youth desired this examinate he might have some meat and a bed for that night which this examinate caused him to have accordingly and when the boy had some meat brought him he could not eat any or very little at all and this examinate's wife demanding 2d for the same the said boy gave her 6d and said he would have the rest in beer for other of the guests then present to drink with him and then the said boy entreated him this examinate to call him up from bed at 4 of the clock the morning, but this examinate did not so, but saith that about the break of the day in the morning this examinate did rise from his bed and the said boy being got up that time and ready to go this examinate told him how to open the door and shut it after him and then heard him go by his window towards Boughton… and that within 3 quarters of an house after his departure from this examinate… hue and cry came from Mr Mayor unto this examinate being Constable after a young youth and this examinate did bring the same to Boughton… he did not imagine the said boy that lodged with him to be the same against whom the hue and cry was levied for that his apparel was not so certain described nor any mention of a dagger in the said warrant… which the said boy that lay in his house did wear… and more saith not.
