Examined saith that upon Thursday night last past and about 9 of the clock this examinate did shut in his Master’s shop, and went into the row before Mr Aldersey’s door, and there met with Thomas Evans servant to Thomas Morgell and another young youth that was footman to Mr Sparke and there talked together for the space of an hour, and then this examinate went to his Master’s house and finding the doors shut, he this examinate and the aforesaid went to William ap Hugh’s house and there drunk some beer, with one Daniel a smith, and saith that a Maid of William ap Hugh having corn at the mills, and this examinate and the rest together with William ap Hugh’s man went about 11 of the clock to the mills, and after their coming thither, the said Evans took this examinate’s hat off his head and threw it away and this examinate did likewise with the said Evans, and did all or most of them pull off one another’s hat, and threw them up and down, and the said Evans having thrown a baker’s boy’s hat into a trough one Otes gave him a box on the ear, whereupon they hard fought… and saith that after that the said Evans did cast the baker’s boy’s hat into the trough, and that (then the boy offering to strike him) the said Evans did cast him down on a sack of corn… [then] this examinate the said Evans and the smith came forth and left the rest and went into this examinate’s Master’s shop and there slept all night and parted with the smith.
Sworn and examined deposeth and saith that upon Thursday last was sevenight about 11 of the clock in the night, William ap Hugh’s maid and his man David a smith and Thomas Evans and Edward Bradley apprentice to Nicholas Hallwood and one Thomas Williams came to Dee Mills the said Hugh’s maid having corn to grind there… and as soon as they came to the mill door the said David knocked at the door and asked who was in the mill, whereupon this deponent did open the door, and then the said David asked this deponent whether there were any other in the Mill than this deponent, whereupon this deponent answered there was none but himself, and thereupon said that they were come thither to drive him this deponent out of the mill, and presently after did all of them excepting the maid, take hold of one of the boys Robert Lowe his man being then asleep upon a sack of corn and carried him to the meal trough side and 4 of them holding him by the arms and legs, the other did fill his mouth with meal, and this examinate coming unto them to see what they did at the boy, they did then let him fall down upon the ground, upon which fall the boy did waken and took his hat from one of them, and thereupon the said Evans and Williams went to the other boy and threw his hat up and down the mill, and the said Evans immediately gave the boy 2 or 3 boxes on the ears, and the said Williams did cast him down by the trough side 2 or 3 times together, whereupon the boy cried, and this deponent seeming so abused came to them and finding them all together did give Hugh’s man a box over the ears and tripped up his heels not knowing which of them did abuse him, and Hugh’s man and some of the rest offering to come upon this deponent and to strike at him the said David the smith came between them and persuaded them to be quiet lest they should bring themselves to trouble and so at length they parted and left this deponent and went their way.
Sworn and examined deposeth and saith that… this deponent being asleep in the mills the said Evans did take this deponent’s hat off his head and threw it from one mill to the other, and this deponent taking his hat again the said Thomas Williams did strike this deponent twice or thrice and knocked him down with his fist, and likewise the said Evans did thrust this examinate and touch him in the arm, and would not part from this deponent until his cried and that the said Connolly came unto this deponent for to help him.
Examined saith that upon Thursday night last past this examinate being in William ap Hugh’s house, the said Evans and Bradley came into the house, and there drunk together with this examinate, and saith that Hugh’s maid and one Williams his mad requested this examinate to go with them to the mills with a tailor that laid at Hugh’s house, and saith that the said Evans and the tailor took hold of a boy by his arms and legs that was then lying upon a sack and did shake him, but to this examinate’s knowledge did not strike him, and saith that upon their forthcoming to the mills Hugh’s maid knocked at the door, and thereupon one of the millers asked who was there, and then this examinate asked him whether there were any more people in the mill than he, who answered no, whereupon this examinate said then we are enough.
