The constables of St Giles do inform upon oath that they having a warrant from Mr Mayor directed to them for levy of 20s of the goods of Thomas Suggate for selling beer without licence, they went yesterday and other times before to the said Thomas Suggate and demandeed of him the sid twenty shillings or a distress for the same but the said Suggate refused to pay the money or to yield any distress saying that he would lose his life before he would suffer any distress to be taken and said if the sheriffs came they should have no distress there, he would first lose his blood before they should have any.
The constables of St Giles do further inform that Thomas Southgate did say to them that he would give a barrel of beer that the soldiers might come for he had rather be governed by them than by petty tradesmen.
