Who say they were watchmen by order of the constable[s] of West Wymer ward the last Saturday night. And going their rounds in St Benets Street between two and three a clock on the Sunday morning, they heard singing by some men at James Cragett's house in St Bennetts aforesaid. And William Rutter the constable was there in the street with them who ordered John Hakes to go over to Cragett's house and dismiss the company. And accordingly the deponent Hakes went over and knockt at the door saying that it was time to leave off tippling and singing for it was two a clock in the morning. Cragett's wife denied to let him in and said they had no company there. The deponent said, Yes, there was Thomas Beare. And then she lockt the door and said they should not come in. Cragett's wife asked if the constable was there; he said, what constable; Hakes said Mr Rutter; she replied and said, What, Rutter that dog that betrayed her husband. And then William Rutter hearing her revile him came and spake himself. And then she further said to him, the said William Rutter, that he was a poxt dog and had been under Doctor Symons hands and cured of the pox four times.
