Layout:Pricking: where visible slits. Writing space: ruled for 190 x 95 mm. Single columns with 35 lines. Frame and lines ruled in drypoint.
Writing: Scribe 1 (ff. 3r to 8v line 6; 30v lines 19-31; 53r line 28 to 78v; 84r to 84v line 24; 111v-114r) writing in black/brown ink in an Anglicana hand. Characteristics: ascender of first initial on each line is extended into the left margin, looks almost flourished. B-shaped w; 8-shaped s in final position; hooked/looped ascender on b, h, and l; double compartment a in initial position; double compartment/looped d; v-shaped r in final and medial position; descender of y is hooked/looped backwards to form a u-shape; long s in medial position; ?; flat topped t; ž. Body height: 2-3 mm. Scribe 2 (ff. 8v line 7 to 30v line 18; 31v to 53r line 27; 79r-83v; 84v line 25 to 111r) writing in black ink (now faded) in an Anglicana hand. Characteristics: ascenders of first initial on each line extended into left margin, looks flourished, unlike Scribe 1 this extension is longer. Sigma s in initial and final position; long s in medial position; 2-shaped r in medial position; double compartment a; B-shaped w; f sits on the line; v-shaped r in medial position; descender of y has a much shorter flick up than that of Scribe 1; 8-shaped g. Body height: 2 mm.
Decoration: Initial page: five-line blue Lombardic initial with red penwork flourishing along top and left margin extending to another three-line blue Lombardic initial with red penwork forming a two-sided border. Four/five-line blue Lombardic initials with red penwork flourishing occur occasionally through the manuscript.
Binding: Not medieval. Size: 250 x 165 mm. Cover of red leather with the usual Trinity College binding.
Foliation:ff. ii (earlier MSS thirteenth century?) + 114 + i modern parchment from rebinding. i + 115
Additions:Prick preceded on ff. 1-2v by a fragment of a Latin missal in double columns.
Condition:Good.

Origin:Unknown
Provenance:F. 58r - ' amen' (seventeenth century). On f. 75r the same? hand has written, 'Joseph Cooke is a Roundhead'. In same hand again, f. 82r 'Joseph Cooke is a very Knaue god wott'. F. 84r - 'William/ Fylding'. F. 65r 'amen george fylding'. Two indecipherable inscriptions on f. 114v which are possibly of the fifteenth/sixteenth century.

Related Manuscripts and other documents Textual According to Lewis and McIntosh this manuscript is a member of the Lichfield subgroup (1982, p. 122). Scribal Scribe 1 is the same as Scribe 1 of Holkham Hall, Wells, Norfolk, Library of the Earl of Leicester, MS 668 (Lewis and McIntosh, 1982, pp. 54-5, 121-2) and Doyle notes that this scribe was also Scribe 1 of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Eng. poet. a.1 (Vernon) (Doyle 1987, p. 12, pl. 6). On f. 1r of the Holkham manuscript this scribe has written, 'Nomen scriptoris Johannes plenus amoris [...] benedicat rex orientis'. The Vernon scribe was also responsible for the Chronicle and Cartulary of Stoneleigh Abbey and two views of frankpledge for the manor of Radway, south Warwickshire (Doyle 1987, p. 5, 12).
