dayes and two nights, during which time he was welcommed with all imaginable expressions
of honour and respect and at the Castle, which he had the honour to be invited to,
he was entertain'd as if the King of Spain, had been there himselfe, he went to see the
Town, and the rarieties of the Churches, which as anciently so now exceeds all others
in there Countries, if not in Christendome, at his departure, happy was he that could
kisse his cloak, which by accident hung out of the Coach, as he past away: Friday morning
he departed hence, having dined at Machlin, he came to Bruxels that night,
where he was as all along most largely welcommed, and royally entertained, and had
been more had not his comming been at a time when the Arch-Duke was so deeply engaged
in the reliefe of his deerest Mistris Cambray, which as some letters come at this instant
to this place say, is done to the great prejudice of the Frencht; he certainty whereof expect
by the next.
Wednesday July 4.
THe Act for sale of the late Kings goods, &c. had past but that there were the Christen
names of some of the sellers wanting a Committee was made to desire a Common
Councell for the loan of 150000 l. upon the Excise in the vacant time: which in few
days begins: there seeming to be a necessity of a sum in hand for the service of Ireland
which the Lord Liev. desires at departure; the chief businesse was about such Papists
Compositions as have been in armes and in regard two parts were formerly disposed as
to the Revenue by act of Parl. from them, the question was put whether they be permitted
to compound, for the third when (after much debate) the question was put whether the
Question should be put, it was carried in the negative: they should do well to Petition to
have all sold, and that they wil depart the Kingdom which would bring them a far greater
share, and sure with more content elsewhere then here.
Where it is said Brasse Guns are shipped to serve against Scotland, they are only for
the defence of Newcastle.
Col. Horton's Regiment in Wales does not yet consent to go for Ireland.
Letters from the North say, That there are some preparations for a new Levy in Scotland
15000 Horse and Foot to be added to the 5000 now in Arms, Gen. Levin its conceived
will decline engagement, the Marq. of Argyle or the Lord Lothianin election to be
Generall. And the old Gen. Levin being desired to give up that strong Castle of Edenburgh
by reason of Age, excused saying. That he was resolved to resign it to none but to
him that intrusted him, viz. the late King, or he that succeeded yet his charges were offered
to be re-inburst. The Troop of my Lord Chancellour, and the Life-guard of the Generall
most Gentlemen, ordered thanks and disband much displpleases.
The Parl. hath sent a message to the Queen of Swethland, with a large Narative of
what they did joyntly with the Parliament of England, where they fell oft how they
detest their late proceedings how their young King is seduc'd by evill Councell and from
then[unr] hath not given their Commissioners satisfaction; necessary for his own and the
Kingdomes Weal.
Desiring they will perswade with him to a condiscention, this is a mystery; the Deputy
Governour of Newcastle L. Col. Paul Hobson is come to Edenburgh his bussinesse
is variously spoken, some whisper that he desires passage to go for Ireland, others to make
way for some farther overture from Parl. of England what ever it is, he is looked upon
with a jealous eye and having a mind to see the strong Castle was denied and told it was
not, compleat enough. We hear that Sir Lewis Dives, and many other English Gallants
