A briefe relation of some affaires, Number 15, 18th-25th December 1649 E.587[2]

to take and seize all those Bookes intituled, Defensio Regid pro Carolo Primo,
ad sereniffimum Rogem Carolum secundum: and have give like charge
to the Officers of all the Towne in Holland : which is the greatest reproach
and disgrace, that can be put upon any scandalous Author or
Libell in these Countreys, and more then hath been practised for a long
time; Salmatius was so sensible of this disgrace, that he thought to have
written to the States to forbeare so to censure it; but was told by his
Friends. That it was in vaine, for it was resolved, and he would be able to
effect nothing in it; his Name was not put in the Fiscals Order, because
he puts it not in the Booke: but he hath lost more credit in the opinion
of all wife men here by this invective Libell, than even he will recover againe,
he hath so many falsities, and mistakes, as he hath lost all reputation;
and men say here, that he may be a good Scholler of other mens
learning, being of great reading, but that he hath little either wisdome or
judgement of his owne, his chiefe Patrons doe begin to slight and
forsake him. The Fiscalls Order will be published and printed, I will
then send you a Copy.
Many here, say that the Booke will be much to the advantage of the
Common-wealth of England; for, after the attempts of so great a Champion
(as he hath been accounted) to so little purpose, wherein there is
little but mistake, falshood, and railing, that he could finde in all the
great store-house of his learning, to bring against them, none other will
enter those Lysts, they having been so disastrous and fatall, to all undertakers
either with Sword or Pen.
It is reported here, that two ships of Amsterdam, coming neere Sillyes,
have been taken by some of the Pretenders Commissions; and that Amsterdam
hath sent a rough message to him, requiring restitution, and
threatning if not done
