Mercurius politicus, Number 348, 5th-12th February 1657 E.195[11]

There remain only two Articles undertermined. The
one is, that they should engage to defend Alsatia against the
House of Austria, which they are well enough content to do,
but they are loth to do It upon such Terms, as that it should
upon an hereditary Account be united to the Crown of
France. The other Article concerns the supplying of his
Majesty with men at all times hereafter; which they are willing
to do, but then they insist that they may have the chusing
of the Officers which shall be set over them. It is not doubted
but expedients will shortly be found out to satisfie both Parties
in these Particulars.
The Articles of marriage betwixt Prince Engenius of Savoy
and the Cardinals Niece being finally concluded, the
Contract will be signed by their Majesties on Sunday next,
and tis beleeved, that the next Sunday after, the marriage
will be consummated. This will be advantageous to Savoy in
many respects; and one notable Fruit of it may be seen already,
for France, under pretence of preserving Savoy from the
Spaniard, being possessed of most of the places of strength
belonging to it, the King hath sent order to his Commander
of the Citadel of Turin, the chiefe City, to deliver it up againe
into the hands of the Duke of Savoy, he being now past
his miniority.

It is confirmed, that our private men of war, have taken
an English Merchant ship that was richly laden with Silk, and
was coming from the Straights, but he laded the ship at
Smirna, the name of it is Prosperitie, and was brought by
them into Biscay: some small Prizes are brought in lately
here and at Oftende.
