Mercurius politicus, Number 348, 5th-12th February 1657 E.195[11]

of the Land, by what name soever he was called, whether
Lord Protector or otherwise, is High-treason, he being the chief
Magistrate, and the spring of Justice, in whole name all Writs run, all
Commissions and Grants are made; and that the Statutes of Treason
made 25 Ed 3. as to this, did onely declare what the Common Law
was before the making of that Statute, and was not introductive
of a new Law; and more to that effect; and then proceeded to Judgment
against the Prisoner, in this manner.
The Sentence.
It is considered by the Court, that the said Miles Sundercomb, alias Fish,
be sent from hence to the Prison in the Tower of London from whence
be came, and from thence be drawn upon a Hurdle through the streets of
London to Tyburn, there to be hanged on the Gallons until he be half
dead, and then to be cut down, and his Intrals and bowels taken out,
and burnt in his own sight, and his body divided into four quarters,
and be disposed of as his Highness the Lord Protector shall think fit.
Withini few daies he will be brought forth to Execution.
At the Councill at Whitchall, February 10.
Ordered, by his Highness the Lord Protector, with the advice and
consent of the Councill, that the Trade of the East-India be managed
in the way of a Joynt stock, exclusive to all others.
Monday 9. February, 1656.
A Bill for propagating and more frequent preaching of the Gospel
and maintenance of Ministers in the City of Exceter, and for uniting
of Parishes and Parish. Churches within the said City, was this day read
the second time and committed.
This day being appointed for the reading of private Bills and Petitions,
the House spent the same in business of that nature:
Tuesday 10. Febr.
This day the House spent in some further directions to the Grand
Committee appointed to bring In the Bill for the Assesment towards
the raising of the 400000l. for carrying on the Spanish War, and ordered
the grand Committee to sit upon that Bill to morrow morning
and nothing to intervene.
Wednesday 11 Febr.
A Bill for the incouragement of preaching the Gospell in the towne
of Totness in the County of Devon was this day read.
The House according to former order was resolved into a Grand
Committee upon the Bill for Assessment, and appointed to sit againe
upon the Bill for the Excise to morrow morning, and upon the business
of raising 400000.l. For carying on the Spanish war on Friday next.
