Whitehall, September 23.
This day the Council took into consideration the naming
of Commissioners for the Publique Faith, and several persons
were agreed on for several Counties, and Commissions were
ordered to be prepared.
September. 25
His Highness and the Council appointed Mr. Lockyer,
Mr. Hook, and Mr. How to preach at whitehall on Wednesday
next
Septemb. 26.
One of the Messengers of the Council came from the
Downs with Letters, confirming the News of the taking of
Mardike from the Spaniard by the united Forces of England
and France.
They first applied themselves to the taking of the Wooden
Fort which looks into the Sea; and having raised a Battery
upon which two Guns were planted, they so plied the place
with shot, that the Enemy presently quitted it, and retired
into the Main Fort, where the Army making a near approach,
and being ready to storm, the Enemy bear a Parley,
desieing to capitulate; which being denied, they within a
little time after were glad to surrender upon mercy. The
Place was presently taken into possession by Major-general
Morgan, on the behalf of His Highness the Lord Protector,
and the spaniards that were therein, being in number 600.
whereof 200 were Officers, are sent Prisoners by Sea to
Calais.
The same Messenger brings word, that part of our Fleet
rides at safety within the Splinter before Mardike; the rest
are in the Downs, taking care to ship away the Forces newly
sent hence under the conduct of Col. Gibbons.
