Online Froissart

Earl of Buchan

Froissart, following Jean le Bel’s account of the Battle of Neville’s Cross, claims that an earl of Buchan was killed at the battle. However, in 1346, the title was vacant. The previous earl was John Comyn, who died childless in 1308. His niece, Alicia, countess of Buchan, was married to the English baron Henry de Beaumont, who in December 1312 was given the title of earl of Buchan. But Henry had died in 1340 and could therefore not have taken part in the battle. There is no evidence to suggest that his son John used the title. None of the sources indicate that John took part in the battle, but even if he did, he would not have fought on the Scottish side in 1346. John Comyn’s other heir was his niece Margaret, sister of Alicia. Through her a claim later passed to her husband’s nephew, William, earl of Ross. The earl of Ross, who did not actually take part in the Scottish campaign of 1346, is mentioned as a separate character by Froissart.
