John V, duke of Britanny (d. 1442)

Born in 1389, John was duke of Brittany from 1399 until his death in 1442. Although married to a daughter of king Charles VI of France, John played an ambiguous role in the Anglo-French conflict of his time. While appearing to support the cause of the French king at a personal level, he also stood for an English alliance (his mother, Joan of Navarre, duchess of Brittany, was later to marry king Henry IV of England). It comes as no surprise to learn that his soldiers arrived too late to fight on the French side at Agincourt, although he later allowed his brother, Arthur of Richemont, to fight for the French and, one day, to become constable of France.
